The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 7 ECONOMY Continued from Page 12 the future. Although the markets skyrocketed yesterday, according to experts, the short-term performances of the markets and the economy are hard to predict. "It's sort of a psychological reaction to the fact that something is going to happen that will cause resolution to go either one way or another," Business Prof. Richard Sloan said. "It's hard to see any concrete economic implication at this point." Seyhun said the strength of the U.S. economy will pick up once the war is over with relaxed oil prices and rebounded dollar exchange rates. But Sloan said the impact of the war with Iraq would depend on the develop- ment of the situation. "One thing that could happen is that things get wiped up pretty quickly, oil prices come down, and that could sort of revitalize the economy," Sloan said. "But if things get blocked down and there's a good chance that we'd just stuck in the bottom of the cycle like we are now." STUDENTS Continued from Page 1 anything new," she said. "It's kind of depressing that this is what it's come to - that (President Bush) isn't going to take into account what peo- ple around the world think." Editor in Chief of the Michigan Review James Justin Wilson said he supports Bush. He reacted to Bush's message to the Iraqi people. "The Iraqis are the innocent victims of this conflict," he said. "The U.S. is not going after Iraqi civilians." Wilson added that during the first Gulf War, Saddam put childcare facilities on top "It's kind of depressing that this is what it's come to - that (Bush) isn't going to take into account what people around the world think." - Emily Kearns Anti-War Action! member of military installations as human shields. ALERT Continued from Page 1 . worldwide television audience. An intense White House debate over whether to establish a timetable was settled hours before the president's speech. Some argued that Bush should not set a deadline because Saddam could use the notice to build opposition to the presi- dent's case or even launch a pre-emptive strike. Bush told journalists and weapons inspectors to leave Iraq immediately. He issued his ultimatum after U.N. allies refused to back his bid for a resolution sanc- tioning military force. The diplomatic defeat led Bush to move toward war accompanied by Britain, Spain, Australia and a handful of other nations in his self-described "coalition of the willing." He lashed out at France and other wary allies at the U.N. "These governments share our assess- ment of the danger but not our resolve to meet it," Bush said. For the first time since he drew the nation's attention to Iraq last fall, Bush focused on the questions most asked by Americans: Why war? And why now? Spelling out the threat, he said Saddam has a history of hating America, has ties to terrorists and is a destabilizing force in the Middle East. Primarily, he said Saddam could turn his weapons of mass destruction over to terrorist groups. "Before the day of horror can come, before it is too late to act, this danger will be removed," Bush said. Iraq denied it has weapons of mass destruction, and Bush offered no new evidence to counter Baghdad's assertion. Poised to exercise his doctrine of pre-emptive military action, Bush said responding to enemies who strike first "is not self-defense. It is suicide. The security of the world requires disarming Sad- dam Hussein now." Bush said that after 12 years of diplomacy and weapons inspections, "our good faith has not been returned. The Iraqi regime has used diplo- macy as a ploy to gain time and advantage." Bush addressed Iraqi troops directly. "If war comes, do not fight for a dying regime that is not worth your own life," Bush said. He told soldiers to listen carefully to his warning that they should not destroy oil wells or use weapons of mass destruction. To civilians in Iraq he said, "If we must begin a military campaign it will be directed to lawless men who direct your country and not at you." He pledged the United States would provide food, medicine and other assistance as Iraq recov- ers from war. The address came 24 hours after Bush's return from an Atlantic island summit, where he joined with allies from Britain and Spain to give the U.N. Security Council one day consent to disarm- ing Saddam with force. PROTESTS Continued from Page 1 Some plans for the first day or two of war are writ large, like paralyzing traffic with bicycles and cars and disrupting commerce in San Francisco's financial district. Others are small, like showing a single lit candle on a website of the United Church of Christ. Some are meant to be noisy, like a march in Portsmouth, N.H., with clanging pots and pans. Others will be quiet and solemn, like a vigil in Ann Arbor with Christian, Jewish and Muslim prayers. Many groups intend to carry out die-ins, where activists lie on the ground to symbolize war victims and to block passers-by. Some students at Swarthmore Col- lege, in Pennsylvania, intend to lower campus flags to half-staff. However, in Columbia, S.C., activists hope to serve up satire, making fun of the government's anti-terrorism advice to homeowners. They want to plaster a federal building with duct tape and plastic sheeting. Gordon Clark, the national coordinator of the Iraq Pledge of Resistance, said acts of civil disobedience - with the risk of arrest - have been set up at more than 50 cities. "When you get to the point that the war actually begins, that's a point when many ... feel they have to take the strongest action they can personally take," he said. It was not clear how many supporters would follow through with illegal actions, faced with possible arrest. However, in Philadelphia, organizer Robert Smith said at least 50 activists, both young and middle-aged, were ready to block entrances of a federal building. the michigan daily FALL 2003 ONE, two, & three bdrm. unfurn.
