The Michigan Daily - Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 7A DOLLAR Continued from Page 1A according to a report released yes- terday by the U.S. Commerce Department. Although the dollar regained some losses yesterday, O'Sullivan said the dollar will continue to weaken and UBS Warburg's foreign exchange team is forecasting that its value will be at $1.15 per euro by the end of this year. Even though the depreciation of the dollar will help lift the worries about deflation in the country, O'Sullivan said, it could still signal problems with the economy. "If the dollar is declining because people are more negative on U.S. financial markets, then people will. be pulling out money from the financial markets, and that's a nega- tive effect on the economy," he added. RALLY Continued from Page 1A testers in Iraq will be killed. That's a big differ- ence between Iraq and here." "Anyone who says that we're going to war for oil is crazy,"he said. Law student David Anziska said the rally showed the strength of support for war against Iraq. "I think we're a greater part of this student population than we realize," he said. Other students objected to the aggressiveness of the rally and the general support for war in Iraq. LSA sophomore Megan Williamson, an Anti- War Action! protester, objected to walking across the flags. "The demonstration that they had was not very convincing. It was disrespectful and showed a lack of analysis of the current situation to walk over the U.N. flag," she said. Despite his support for war in Iraq, LSA jun- ior John Turpening said he found the rally too militant. "Ideally, you could have a rally where everyone is dialoguing, but the nature of rallies today is the mob effect - you get people fired up and yelling things," he added. LSA sophomore Elizabeth Ayer, an organizer of the anti-war protest, said it was necessary to have a presence at events where students show support for war against Iraq. "Our plan is to have a silent presence with clear messages because we don't want to prevent YAF from their right to voice their opinion," Ayer said. "We want to counter YAF's message that a war is to liberate the Iraqi people and (we want) to show that in fact you can't liberate dead people and to expose the real reasons and results of a war against Iraq." Eggers said in a written statement that the rally was part of a series of national YAF demonstra- tions, including one in California where protest- ers dumped more than 60 bottles of French wine into the sewer. A debate today will continue the war dialogue on campus. Doctoral student Justin Shubow, sup- porting a war, will debate Residential College Director and economics Prof. Tom Weisskopf, opposed to war, will be in room 1210 of the Chemistry Building at 7:30 p.m. LETTER Continued from Page 1A War "will set a dangerous precedent for any state wishing to launch a preemptive strike against its own foes," the letter stated. "Step back from the brink, Mr. President, for the sake of humanity and those enduring values for which our nation stands." Porter, who is currently studying at the NHC, said the letter represents mainly a symbolic gesture to increase awareness about the dangers of war. "I frankly don't have any illusions that it's going to have any effect on the president," Porter said, although he added that the letter could lead to other forms of protest. "I think it's very important for scholars and teachers of humanities to register their concerns about the administration's policies." He added that the humanities play an enormous role in war by showing a darker side of battle that politicians do not always discuss. "The role of the humanities in our society is to keep the past and its lessons alive for us," Porter said. "Much of the current debate about this com- ing war is speaking from a position of disregard for the important lessons we can draw from our rich cultural heritage." He noted that a tapestry of Pablo Picasso's well- known Guernica - a painting depicting the horrors of the Spanish Civil War - was covered up for a U.N. press conference. It was "a powerful indication of the contin- ued relevance of art and literature about think- ing about these things," Porter said. "Confronting the reality of war through art and literature can serve as an antidote to the dumb- ing effect of euphemistic rhetoric." -Daily StaffReporter Tomislav Ladika contributed to this report. the michigan daily ISSA PROPERTIES - I &2 Bedroom Apts. -3 Bedroom Houses -Furnished -Excellent Campus Locations -Parking Reputable Management Now Leasing for May 2003 and Sept. 2003 341 E.
