The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 7 IRAQ Continued from Page 1 prised by the comments, Rumsfeld's office issued a written statement saying his main point in the news conference was that obtaining a second U.N. Securi- ty Council resolution "is important to the United Kingdom" and that both countries were working to achieve it. "In the event that a decision to use force is made, we have every reason to believe there will be a significant mili- tary contribution from the United King- dom," Rumsfeld's statement said. In London, Blair's office told The Associated Press: "This does not change anything. We are still working for a sec- ond resolution. We are not at a state of military combat but there has been com- plete cooperation between the United Kingdom and the United States through- out on the military planning side." The U.S. commander who would lead a war against Iraq, Gen. Tommy Franks, met in Amman, Jordan yester- day with King Abdullah II. Franks' office was releasing few details about1 his schedule, although officials said he was headed to Afghanistan to visit U.S. troops and then to the Persian Gulf.; His last stop will be his Gulf command post at Camp As Sayliyah, Qatar. It remained unclear whether Franks intended to remain there for the dura- tion of the Iraq crisis. PEACE Continued from Page 1 not believe Saddam is a threat to his neighbors or the United States. "It is pointed out again and again that containment has worked. In the last 12 years Iraq has attacked no one, has engaged in no terror activities, and, cer- tainly, has not crossed the United States" Rivers said. She added that the decision to go to war should not be about Hussein's leadership, but about whether war is necessary to protect the United States against an attack. Area community member Ismat Hamit, a former Iraq resident, agreed with Rivers, saying that though he believes Hussein should be forced out of his position, a war is not the best approach to the situation. "The majority of (Americans origi- nally from Iraq), they are against the war. They know the country is going to be destroyed and hundreds and thou- sands are going to be killed," he said. Rivers also said she believes a war against Iraq will deplete already scarce domestic funding as more and more dollars go toward a war abroad. Presi- dent Bush and his supporters, while admitting that a war will be costly in terms of money, believe that the price of another attack similar to that of Sept. 11 would be much greater, when taking into account lives, money, and public security. Phifer said the American pub- lic should not let its anger over Sept. 11 or their fears that another tragedy could occur lead to war. "It is right to bring to justice the plan- ners and financiers and collaborators who perpetrated this hideous act," he said. "But there is not one scintilla of evidence that Saddam Hussein had any- thing to do with it." If a war on Iraq does happen, Rivers said, it could lead to a "fiscal disaster" for the United States. Rivers said the Congressional Budget Office estimates that a war in Iraq could cost $272 billion, money Rivers said would be better spent on balancing cuts at both the federal and state level, including those in education, childcare and research. Ann Arbor City Council- woman Kim Groome, who in December voted in favor of a resolution opposing to a war against Iraq, said in a statement written for the press conference that war will have "definite, negative impacts" on Ann Arbor. "War will certainly bring the loss of lives and the further reduction of monies available to the state and its municipali- ties as the war effort siphons off needed dollars. For Michigan, and for many other states around the country, addi- tional cuts in funding will be very diffi- cult to absorb, Groome said. AL-ARIAN Continued from Page 1. heartbreaking to see that. TMD: Did it come as a complete shock to you? Al-Arian: He's been under investigation for eight or nine years so, it's always been a possi- bility in the back of our minds but we're con- fident that he's never done anything wrong. I'm extremely proud of all of the work my father's done. I honestly don't think that he committed anything or that he did anything illegal. In that sense, because I don't think he's done anything illegal I had more faith in the government that they wouldn't target him, but I think after September 11 everything changed. TMD: What was your initial response to the charges against your father on the day of his arrest? Al-Arian: I was at school at Georgetown University and an administrator who I work with called me up at around 9 a.m. and said, "I heard the news." At that point I hadn't heard but I could tell that something serious had happened ... there were FBI agents all over my house. They also searched our house for twelve hours. I was completely devastated. It came as a shock to me because I didn't think that (U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft) and the Justice Department would go this far and basically make a case out of my father for the Muslim community nationally. Basically, it sort of told people, this is what happens if you speak out. This is what happens if you dare become an advocate of any sort as a Muslim leader. TMD: What do you think of the current political climate? Do you think that there is a lot of anti-Arab sentiment? Al-Arian: Within the administration there is definitely a lot of anti-Arab, anti-Muslim senti- ment. Not necessarily within the populace but I think that judging from President Bush and his administration, particularly Ashcroft, the laws that they have been passing have targeted Mus- lims. You have everything now from expanding federal powers to completely unconstitutional provisions and laws like the PATRIOT Act. It's really a scary environment now. I know so many of my friends have family members who are leaving the country for Canada or for other places because there's this feeling among Mus- lims that we aren't safe here or that we're being targeted. TMD: How has this affected your personal life? Al-Arian: It's definitely made me a lot more skeptical. I'm a lot less idealistic about living here and being treated as an equal. I think we live in a time when fear and hysteria are sort of overtaking, at a time when we've lost all sense of what this country stands for. It's really sad because the ideals that this nation was founded on are slowly being shelved in the name of national security but really the wrong people are being targeted. TMD: Did you ever think that something like this could happen to your family and community? Al-Arian: No, I was born and raised in this country. I always felt like I belonged here, but now, I love the U.S. I love America, it's the only place I've ever known, but I just feel like it's a dangerous place for Muslims to live in now. A lot of us don't feel safe. They feel like they can be targeted at any given moment. Mosques are monitored, peo- ple's library books are being looked at, and campus police are working with the FBI. It's looking a lot more like a police state than a democracy. I'm worried about what else is going to happen. TMD: How is your family dealing with what happened? Al-Arian: We're trying to cope with it. It's definitely very difficult. Especially whenever we visit my father. We're just trying to do as much as possible to help him and to help the community. Right now, I've just been trying to reach as many people as possible and inform them about my father and what they can do to help. TMD: What is your response to people who call your father a terrorist? Al-Arian: An indictment is never a convic- tion. We live in the U.S., which prides itself on being a democracy and on having the princi- ple of innocent until proven guilty, and I hope that my dad gets the presumption of inno- cence. I also hope that he gets a fair trial, which is supposed to be guaranteed to all peo- ple in this country. The burden of proof is on the government and not on him. It's not like the government has never lied to us before. It's not like they haven't taken things completely out of context or misconstrued before. TMD: How has your father been coping with recent events? Al-Arian: He's staying strong and his faith helps him get through. I just hope that he'll get out on bail so that he can have time to prepare an adequate defense. I think it'll definitely help his case a lot more if he's out on bail. It will be more fair for him to be able to defend himself. He's a political prisoner, and I guess he's just hoping that people will stand up for him like he's stood up for so many others:... he's devoted so much time and energy fighting for the civil rights of American citizens. the michigan daily FALL 2003- HUGE 4 bdrm. bi-level pent- RIVER'S EDGE APARTMENTS !!!!
