The Michigan Daily - Thursday, February 20, 2003 - 7A BURKE Continuedirom Page 5A night he served notice once and for all that the Michigan basketball program is back in a big way. Much of that recovery is no doubt thanks to Horton, who started as the favorite for Michigan's Freshman of the Year, became the frontrunner for Big Ten Freshman of the Year and now ... Forget Brian Cook, Kirk Penney and Willie Deane. The Big Ten's Player of the Year dons the Maize and Blue. "There's still a lot of basketball to be BOILER MAKERS Continued from Page 5A fought through that," Amaker said. "He's a senior, and he's a tough player. He showed that determination and tough- ness here tonight." "He's a big time player," said Horton, who called Blanchard a candidate for Big Ten Player of the Year. "That's the kind of stuff he does. If you give him the ball with his feet set, you can pretty much count it." Despite Blanchard's late-game com- posure, Horton led Michigan all evening - especially in the first half, when he played," Amaker said."But if we keep winning and (Horton) keeps playing the way he's playing, then why not?" Amaker might not want to say too much too soon about his freshman or his team's suddenly very real, very bright, chances at a Big Ten title. But Amaker's vote for Big Ten Player of the Year can be found in his list of players he would trade Horton for: "No one." Chris Burke can be reached at chrisbur@umich.edu. finished with 21 points, nine coming from the free throw line. At one point in the half, Horton had 13 of Michigan's 23 points. "He played a great game today," said Purdue forward Kenneth Lowe, who was assigned to Horton. "It's hard to stop a good player when he's going, and he got going early in the game. He con- tinued to play well for the 40 minutes." Horton dominated a first half that saw Purdue come out sluggish and unpre- pared. The Boilermakers connected on just 6-of-21 first-half attempts, only staying in the game because of their 16- of-17 clip from the free throw line. Struggling M' faces Lady Lions By Daniel Bremmer Daily Sports Writer To say that the Michigan women's basketball team has played poorly over the course of its seven-game losing streak would be a gross understatement. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, things won't to get any easier for them tonight in State College, where Michigan takes on No. 13 Penn State. The teams' first meet- ing this season came on Super Bowl Sunday, when the Lady Lions defeated the Wolverines 72-70 following a bucket TONTG Michigan N.... 3 P: . . . . . P tans' zone. But compared to Penn State's intense zone, Michigan State's zone is just mediocre. Michigan forward Jennifer Smith was a force on the inside against the Spartans, lighting them up for 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting. But Smith was the only one who could get anything done offensive- ly, and this ultimately killed Michigan. If the Wolverines at hope to have any chance in State Happy Valley tonight, they will need to penetrate the lane for easy jumpers, and ee work the high-low game with Smith to perfection. "Coach asked me if I want- ed to be the go-to player, and I said I wanted to be all along," Smith said Tuesday. "Along with that, when I get the ball, I know I want to shoot, and I have the mentality that I can shoot and make the basket." Leading the Penn State attack is jun- ior guard Kelly Mazzante, a favorite for Big Ten Player of the Year. Mazzante, who is averaging 24.7 points per game this season, was held to just 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting earlier this season against Michigan. But it's not often that Mazzante shoots just 33 percent from the floor, and Guevara knows that she will be making more shots tonight. "I think the rims at (the) Bryce Jordan (Center) are going to be a little more friendly to her than here at Crisler. "Mazzante's such a dangerous weapon that sometimes you focus too much on her, and you have a (junior Jes- sica) Brungo and a (sophomore Jess) Strom. There's a lot of weapons, and we're just going have to try and not let them get their averages." As Guevara indicated, in addition to containing Mazzante, the Wolverines will have their hands full with Penn State's role players. Brungo, who torched the Wolverines for 25 points in their last meeting, is averaging 12 points per game this year, while Strom has averaged 11 points per game in Big Ten play. Their last time out, the Lady Lions were defeated by Iowa 80-75, and Gue- vara knows Penn State will be hungry to make up for that loss. with just six seconds remaining. Since then, the season has gone straight down- hill for the Wolverines, and their loss to Penn State was the start of their current seven-game streak. In Sunday's 82-55 thumping at the hands of rival Michigan State, the Wolverines had trouble getting off quali- ty shots all afternoon against the Spar- BRENDAN O'DONNELL/Daily Michigan junior Stephanie Gandy will have to step up in State College. "(Penn State coach Rene Portland) will have those kids ready to roll, espe- cially after the disappointing loss they had at Iowa," Guevara said. "There's nothing more dangerous than a wound- ed Nittany Lion, (except) maybe a wounded Wolverine." the michigan daily r 1 .
