riday February 7, 2003 michigandaily.com sportsdesk@umich.edu PORTSr~oa ~al 7 Third season' not a charm for Cagers This time, banner to go up Crisler rafters By Daniel Bremmer Daily Sports Writer Remember when you were a kid playing a sports game m.IOWA 65 on Ninten- do? If you MICHIGAN 57 were losing with two minutes to go, a simple press of a button solved all your problems. Unfortunately for Michigan women's basketball coach Sue Guevara, there's no "reset" button in real life. So far, Guevara has tried to hit the reset button twice this season, telling her team that it was starting over at 0-0, first after its 0-2 Big Ten start and again on Sunday following the first half of the conference season. Last night at Crisler Arena, Iowa sent the Wolverines (2-7 Big Ten, 11-9 over- all) to an 0-1 start in their third season with an easy 65-57 victory - the fourth straight loss for Michigan. Coming out of the lockerroom at halftime down by seven, the Wolver- ines needed to pick up their defensive intensity and look to make a run. But a determined Iowa team came out with a fire underneath it, going on a 15-2 run to open up a 20-point lead in the first five minutes of the second half. "It was really nice to see we were getting steals and converting them into fastbreak layups," Iowa coach Lisa Bruder said. "That's when we really got our lead. (We) converted some 3- point plays too, which is nice for us to build that lead in the beginning of the second half." Michigan made a charge to cut the deficit back down to seven midway through the half, following two buckets from freshman Niki Reams and a driv- ing layup by sophomore Tabitha Pool. But this was as close as the Wolverines would get, as turnovers and fouls killed them down the stretch. "The foul trouble got us out of (the game)," Guevara said. "The high-low was working, and we were able to establish the inside game, which we wanted to, and then we got into foul trouble and had to make some substitutions. We went on a lit- tle bit of a drought." Limited by fouls in the second half, senior LeeAnn Bies scored just two points, finishing the game with 13. By Seth Klempner Daily Sports Writer History will come alive tomorrow afternoon in Crisler Arena when Michigan (6-2 Big Ten, 13-8 overall) takes on Iowa (4-3, 12-6). No, Fritz Crisler and Fielding Yost will not be making their triumphant returns for the Maize and Blue. Rather, former Michigan All-American Rudy Tomjanovich, cur- rent head coach of the Houston Rockets, will be in attendance. The Michi- gan alum will have his No. 45 jersey retired dur- ing halftime of tomor- row's game, becoming just the second player to receive such a distinction besides Cazzie Russell. Michigan coach Tommy Amaker hopes that Michigan learned from the "brand of basketball played last week" and uses it to propel itself for the rest of the season. If nothing else, Michigan will be healthier after having a " respite from its normal kRENA Wednesday game. There is no doubt that the rigor- (6-2 Big ous schedule was starting ill) vs. to take its toll on the Wolverines, as they col- will retire lected minor injuries like Sand cur- it was a hobby. ckets Amaker gave his team anovich's Sunday and Tuesday off and halftime. shortened several of the team's practices this week. ALYSSA WOOD/Daily Michigan coach Sue Guevara, her assistant coaches and senior Raina Goodlow (far right) watch the women's basketball team drop its fourth consecutive game. Iowa (4-5, 12-8) was led by All-Big Ten candidate Jennie Lillis, who fin- ished with 18 points and eight boards. The Hawkeyes converted on 4-of-5 free throw attempts in the last two minutes to seal the game. Coming off a disappointing six- point, four-rebound performance at Wisconsin on Sunday, Bies opened the game determined to make a difference. Bies blew up for 11 points in the first seven minutes of the game, aggressive- ly charging to the hoop on every touch. But after she picked up her second foul, Bies was forced to sit with 9:08 to go in the half. By halftime, all of Michigan's inside forces were in foul trouble - junior Jennifer Smith and senior Raina Goodlow had three apiece - and joined Bies on the bench. 9 Kowalski's cat- By Kyle O'Neil Daily Sports Editor There's no question that Michigan knows how to attack Northern Michigan's defense. It outshot the Wildcats by a total of 12 shots in its two losses last December. The question is whether the Wolverines can get any- thing by Northern Michigan goalie Craig Kowalski. The Wildcats' netminder held Michigan to just three goals on the weekend in Marquette, as his teammates scored a two-day total of nine. like reflexes pi And it wasn't as if Michigan didn't get its chances. Numerous times the Wolverines had Kowalski out of position, and numerous times they shot the puck right into one of his pads. "I think it's going to take traffic in front of the net, guys going to the net to get kicks off of rebounds," sen- ior John Shouneyia said. "I don't think we created the traffic we needed when we played them. (Kowalski) is a good goalie, but we made him look better than he is." Michigan needs to find a way to score against a Northern Michigan team that has won the last five meetings between the two teams. Being home at Yost t jinx on Blue Ice Arena isn't going to help much, as the Wildcats have won the past three there, including two shutouts. The importance of sweeping the weekend is increased tenfold because Michigan is still four points back of first-place Ferris State. The Bulldogs have played two more games than Michigan, though, so if the Wolverines win their next six games, they will tie Ferris State - assuming it goes undefeated in its next four games. Since the Bulldogs have Feb. 21-22 off and Michigan plays Nebraska-Omaha that weekend, the Wolverines could theoretically use the two wins over the Mavericks to make up the point differential. Tomjanovich led the Wolverines in scoring and rebounding all three years he played at Crisler (1967-70), and currently ranks sixth on Michigan's all-time scoring list (1,808). But Tomjanovich will not be the one making history tomorrow. The Wolver- ines, who have dominated their home court, will be going for their 11 th straight home victory for the first time since 1991. The Wolverines are 10-2 at home this season and have won all four of their Big Ten games in Crisler. Michigan couldn't be happier that it is playing at home after two close road loses to No. 14 Illinois and Minnesota. Said freshman Lester Abram about returning to Crisler: "It is a chance to But he also raised the intensity level during the time tley did spend in prac- tice, and made sure his players returned to the basics. Unfortunately, during this time off, Michigan was unable to get com- pletely healthy. Freshman guard Daniel Horton, who is leading the team in minutes played, felt some- thing pop in his ankle during practice Wednesday. Horton is not concerned with the injury and expects to play this weekend. Michigan will need him for the stretch run at the Big Ten Champi- onship. It is just one game behind Pur- due for first place. With that goal in its sights, Michigan has the opportunity to put up more than just Tom- janovich's No. 45 banner this season. the michigan daily RIVER'S EDGE APARTMENTS !!!!
