The Michigan Daily - Thursday, February 6, 2003 - 7A McCOLLOUG H Continued from Page 5A Perry rushed for 78 yards against Notre Dame, including a costly fourth-quarter fumble, and 14 yards against Iowa at the Big House. Oh, what could have been. And then there's Baraka, the most recent highly-touted tail- back dropout from the maize and blue camp. Baraka, a Portage native, was the prize of Michigan's 2001 class. In the summer before his freshman season, Baraka was arrested twice for possession of marijuana. Carr decided to force Baraka to sit out his freshman season, but allowed him to stay on scholarship and retain four years of eligibility. But Baraka blew it. He was dismissed from the team in April 2002. If you're keeping score at home or in lecture, that's two years, two top-ranked running backs out of the picture. Oh, what could have been. So here we are, it's signing day 2003, and when I glance over Michigan's list of commitments, there are two running backs, the michigan daily Jerome Jackson and Anton Campbell - both of whom Carr mentioned might play defense. Maybe he has given up on blue- chip running back recruits like Fargas and Baraka all together. With the Michigan backfield situation as it is, how are there not at least three or four running back recruits in this class? Especially when there are positions on this team that are stockpiled with talent. Wide receiver should be set for years. There are two blue-chip quarterbacks waiting for John Navarre to graduate. The offensive line is young and deep. The only thing holding this offense back is a stable of dependable running backs. But it might not be so bad. The Wolverines brought in six (SIX!) talented defensive backs in this class. All Carr has to do to fix his problems in the offensive backfield is take a page out of the Justin Fargas book and turn it upside down. Move them to running back. It's just that simple. J Brady McCollough can be reached at bradymcc@umich.edu. SIGNEES Continued from Page 5A BARAKA'S SAGA: Carr also comment- ed on Kelly Baraka, one of the top recruits in the nation two years ago, who was dismissed from the football team last spring. There were rumors during the fall semester of Baraka's return to the team because he was enrolled at the University. Now that Baraka is no longer enrolled, it is clear he will not wear the maize and blue again. Asked if Baraka ever had a chance to return to the football team, Carr responded in a concise manner. "Hypothetically." Carr went on to wish Baraka the best in the future. The newest Wolverines Michigan signed 17 players yesterday who will join the Wolverines for the start of next season. WOODLEY Continued from Page 5A be coming to Ann Arbor, but they will be roommates as well. "I'm a neat freak, and I like to rearrange things. I don't know about (LaMarr)," Jackson ;«.. said. Woodley com- mented on his ability x to make a mess: "It's going to be hard ... I just come back and get it the next day. I Jackson guess Jerome is going to be the daddy around the house." While the two teammates expressed much desire to go to Michigan and were happy with their choices, both have some memorable experiences from the recruiting trail. "Purdue flew me in on a private jet," Jackson said. "They showed me a lot of love, and it was hard telling Coach (Brock) Spack - he's the defensive coordinator, he was recruiting me - that I was going to another school, but I appreciate everything he did for me." While Jackson was getting treated like royalty, in some places Woodley couldn't even get recruited at the posi- tion he wanted. "I cut (Oklahoma) off a long time ago," Woodley said. "They were recruit- ing me as a defensive end, and I wasn't going to play defensive end." One part of the recruiting process that both players had to endure was saying no to Michigan State - though the Spartans had made it easi- er for them when Bobby Williams was fired in the middle of last season. "(Tuesday) night, I talked to (Michigan State assistant head) coach Reggie Mitchell - he was one of the coaches to remain after coach Bobby Williams got fired - because (LaMarr and I) had a really good relationship with him," Jackson said. "That was a hard day telling him no, because he was recruiting us from the beginning. But he under- stood and he wished me good luck." The fact that Michigan State took until mid-December to name a successor to Williams also hurt the Spartans' chances of getting the two recruits. "With Coach Williams there, we had a great communication with him," Wood- ley said. "He wasn't always talking about football when he called us, he was talk- ing about life. When he got fired it just shocked me, because we had such a great relationship. And (Michigan State) stopped contacting us, they weren't call- ing as much. Coach Mitchell was calling, but he wasn't calling as much as he was when coach Williams was there. They took so long to hire a head coach (John L. Smith), you really didn't get a chance to know him." Even with the delay, had the Spartans landed defensive-minded coach Marvin Lewis - who was responsible for build- ing the 2000 Baltimore Ravens' record- setting defense - it would have been much tougher for Woodley to commit to Michigan. On whether he would have been don- ning the Spartan "S" yesterday had Lewis been coaching Michigan State, Woodley said: "I don't even know. Prob- ably would, probably ... I don't even know. (Lewis) didn't get the job." Lewis is in Cincinnati coaching the Bengals, and Michigan fans can rejoice in having a 250-pound linebacker that can run the 40-yard dash in 4.7 seconds. No other player in Lemming's top-25 outside linebackers weighs over 240. "Here you gotta train yourself, you're doing what you can do,"-Woodley said. "Down there, they've got personal train- ers to help you build up your speed and your strength. So I think I'll be even bet- ter when I go down there. "I'm going to try to bring what I can bring. I don't like to talk too much, you know, I just like to show what I can do." Call for Current Specials and Group Discounts! Hurry, Offer Ends Soon! #1 SPRING BREAK VACATIONS!
