"We've had bases loaded opportuni- ties a lot this year without clearing them or maybe getting one run out of them." Yesterday, though, it seemed as if the No. 12 Wolverines had found the answer to their woes against Central Michigan. In the two-game sweep of the Chippewas - 8-0, 7-3 - Michigan had five different opportunities to score with the bases loaded and one out, and just once did the Wolverines fail to score. Twice the bases were cleared entirely with grand slams. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Chippewas scored three runs to tie the game. After a quick out in the top of the fifth inning, Michi- gan's Stefanie Volpe walked, Monica Schock took a pitch off the top of her helmet and Marissa Young singled to load the bases for junior Melinda Moulden. Moulden, who already was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, belted a fastball off of Central Michigan's ace Wendy Stephens over the center-field wall to give the Wolverines a 7-3 lead that they would not let slip away. "I think the beauty of (the grand slam) was that Central had just gotten back in the game," Hutchins said. "It's tough to stay up ... I'm sure the oppo- nent probably got down a little bit. I thought Stephens pitched well against us. She's a nice pitcher with a great off- speed pitch. (But Moulden) has had really good at bats, and she waited until she could get one that she could get a good piece of. I thought it was a really good at bat."1 The other grand slam came in the ; first game from junior Lisa Mack, who has been providing a punch recently to the bottom of the lineup, which hasI struggled for the past few weeks. "Lisa swung a good, consistent bat," Hutchins said. "And I'm pleased with that, and we'll stick with that (lineup)1 while it's working. She's really giving our team a lift." The No. 8 spot in the lineup doesn't see the bases loaded too often, but Mack saw it four times yesterday. Three times in the first game (first, fifth and; seventh innings), and once in the sec-1 ond (second inning).l In her first at bat with the bases juiced - her first appearance of the opener - she singled, knocking in two of Michigan's four first-inning runs. On the next trip up, Mack had to endure some questionable calls from the home-plate umpire, and she struck i J J J J Puchalski p 0 0 0 0' Total 31 8 11 8 Total 23 0 1 0' DANNY MOLOSHOK/D Michigan didn't need bunts to score runs yesterday. The Wolverines made use of two grand slams - one in each game - to sweep their doubleheader. out. But in the final inning of the first game, she wasn't going to let the opportunity pass her by twice. "The first time I was a little mad because the first pitch was way outside and he called it a strike," Mack said. "Then I swung at a bad pitch on the second one, and I thought the third pitch was going to hit me, and (the umpire) hosed me. "And then on the next at bat, I just wanted to turn on the inside pitch because I knew (Central Michigan's Amber Pulchalski) was going to put it there again. Luckily she did, and I did- n't know it was going out, then I got really excited." Mack did have one opportunity to get her second grand slam of the day in the second game. The ball appeared to have a chance to go out, but it was caught by Central Michigan's center fielder Sarah Hamilton. Stephens "didn't throw it fast enough for me to hit it that far," Mack said. "But I was just trying to hit the ball. Luckily it popped up, and we got the sacrifice fly." It makes for an intense setting - just ask Michi- gan pitching coach Steve Merriman. Merriman graduated from Central Michigan in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in educa-_ tion. When the BASEBALL Chippewas came to Notebook Ann Arbor yester- day, Merriman was extra hungry for the win. "I told our guys, they know how I feel. I wanted to kick their rear ends," Merriman said. "That's what you want to do. I'm at Michigan now, and I love it here. It's like a player getting traded, when you play against (your former team), you want to beat them up and have a great day." The Wolverines knew how much the win would mean to Merriman, and they took the field with an added desire to beat the Chippewas. "Merriman went to Central, so he really wanted it bad. So we went after them, but that's baseball," sophomore pitcher Chad Garson said. Garson earned the win for the Wolverines and improved his record to 1-0, thanks in part to the way Merriman called the game; He harassed his alma mater all afternoon with his pitch call- ing. Players and coaches alike com- mended Merriman's ability to scout batters before a game, and his scouting paid off yesterday. Trying to force hitters USE SELF STORAGE! The Sto rage Chest into double plays is a skill Merriman has been trying to teach his pitchers all year. It worked as Michigan converted three double plays against Central Michigan. "We got a couple of ground-ball dou- ble plays," Merriman said. "We're throwing specific pitches to certain loca- tions, trying to induce ground-ball dou- ble plays." But for Merriman, this win is more important than the personal satisfaction of beating his alma mater, because his team needs to build confidence before this weekend's series at Illinois. "Every win we have now is a good win," Merriman said. "Because it is something that's going to help us build down the road." BROCK'S BOMBERS: Michigan junior Brock Koman recorded the 100th and 101st RBIs of his career yesterday. In the third inning, Koman blasted a double into deep center to bring home freshman Matt Butler for the second run of the inning and Koman's 100th RBI. So engrossed in the game, Koman did not even know that he had reached the milestone until the inning was over. "I had no idea, I didn't even realize I was close," Koman said. "I found that out after I came in the dugout for the next inning." At his first at bat, Koman was not able to drive in any runs, so he took advantage of the opportunity his next time at bat. "The first chance today I didn't get the job done, (but) the second chance I got the job done," Koman said with a smile.
