BIOGRAPHY LYN
PHOTOSTORY BY JEFF DICKERSON
DAVID LYNCH IS MORE THAN A FILM DIRECTOR HE IS A PAINTER. WRITER, TV PRODUCER AND WEB DESIGNER, AMONG
SEVERAL OTHER TALENTS. BORN IN MISSOULA, MONTANA, LYNCH WENT FROM SMALL TOWN BOY (THINK "THE STRAIGHT
STORY") TO AN UNEXPECTED AUTEUR (THINK "BLUE VELVET"). GOING FROM ART SCHOOL TO ART SCHOOL IN HIS TEEN
YEARS, LYNCH PICKED UP A CAMERA AND A BECAME ONE OF THE INDUSTRY'S GREATEST VISIONARIES. HIS FIRST FEATURE,
"ERASERHEAD," IS A SURREAL MASTERPIECE, FILLED WITH DARK IMAGES OF A LADY IN A RADIATOR AND A MUTATED BABY.
His NEXT FILM, "THE ELEPHANT MAN," CEMENTED LYNCH AS ONE OF THE MOST PROMISING DIRECTORS IN HOLLYWOOD.
AFTER THE SUCCESS OF THE FILM, LYNCH WAS OFFERED THE DIRECTOR'S CHAIR FOR "RETURN OF THE JEDI," WHICH HE
TURNED DOWN TO MAKE ANOTHER BIG BUDGET SCI-FI MOVIE. HIS HOLLYWOOD PHASE LASTED ONLY ONE FILM: 1984's
"DUNE," WHICH WAS A BOX OFFICE FAILURE, AND FORCED LYNCH TO RECONSIDER HIS ROLE AS A FILMMAKER OVER THE
PAST 25 YEARS, HE HAS CREATED SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE AND UNIQJE FILMS. His LATEST FEATURE FILM,
"MULHOLLAND DR," IS AVANT GARDE, ANTI-HOLLYWOOD AND COMPLETELY LYNCH. HIS NOMINATION FOR BEST DIREC-
TOR IS HIS THIRD, HAVING PREVIOUSLY BEEN NOMINATED FOR "THE ELEPHANT MAN" AND "BLUE VELVET." CURRENTLY,
HE IS CONCENTRATING ON HIS RECENTLY LAUNCHED WEBSITE, DAVIDLYNCH.COM.
