After that layoff, the Wolverines jumped all over Alaska-Fairbanks in a 6-3 win at home. But when coach Berenson leads his team back onto the ice this weekend, he will be facing a much better team in a much more hostile environment. The puck will drop tonight and tomorrow at 8:05 p.m. in the Omaha Civic Auditori- um. "It'll be a huge challenge for our team," Berenson said. Nebraska-Omaha is "as good a team at home as there is in the CCHA." The Wolverines would have hosted Merrima'ck College last weekend, but Michigan had two games taken away this year when the NCAA ruled that it played an extra game last season. The Mavericks°(4-2-0 CCHA, 7-3-0 overall) have already proved themselves to be a major threat in the conference race. During its last home series, No. 6 Nebraska-Omaha swept then-No. 1 Michigan State 4-3 and 5-1. Berenson traveled to Kalamazoo last Friday to watch the Mavericks play Western Michigan. "They have come into this league with a bang, whereas other teams might OMAHA Civic AUDITORIUM Who: No. 12 Michigan (441) vs. No. 6 Nebraska-Omaha (7-3-0) When: 8:05 p.m. today and tomorrow Latest Forwards Milan Gijac (knee) and Craig Murray (groin) will be unable to make the trip for Michigan because of injuries. slowly work their way in," Berenson said. Two weeks ago, the Wolverines (3-3- 1, 4-4-1) won back-to-back games for the first time this season. Led by a strong performance by senior goal- tender Josh Blackburn, Michigan beat Alaska-Fairbanks, 2-1 and 4-0. The week off has lessened the Wolverines' momentum surge. "Sometimes with a week off you are a little bit sluggish and we may show some sluggishness in a game environ- ment," Berenson said. But the overriding theme that Beren- son preached in practice this week was simple: Work ethic. "I want our kids to come to practice with a renewed sense of work ethic," Berenson said. "You can't practice the same way now as you did last year. We have people with expanded roles on the team and they need to step up. Strong practices may not immediately translate into goals this weekend, but everyone is clear about the importance that the coaching staff is placing on intensity and execution during the week. "How you play in practice impacts where you play over the weekend," freshman Eric Nystrom said. STAYING HOME: Unfortunately, injuries are not a new problem for senior for- ward Craig Murray. And once again, he will be staying in Ann Arbor this week- end, this time nursing his groin. A variety of ailments have sidelined Murray throughout his career. He missed the Wolverines' last trip to Alas- ka with a separated shoulder. "I feel really bad for him," Berenson said. "It's frustrating. He was looking good this week, but then this happens. He's a good kid and he works hard - it's just a shame." Freshman forward Milan Gijac will also be unavailable this weekend because of the knee injury he suffered in Alaska. IT'S GOING AROUND: Several players have missed significant portions of practice this week because of flu symp- toms. Freshman forward Michael Woodford was out for several days, jun- ior alternate captain Mike Cammalleri and freshman forward Jason Ryznar were also held out of yesterday's prac- tice, but each of them are expected to play this weekend. Berenson offered one possible reason for the flu outbreak: The team received flu shots last week. It is not uncommon for the vaccine to cause temporary illness to those who receive it.
