The Michigan Daily - SportsMonday - November 12, 2001- 5B "TO COME OUT HERE AND LOSE THE SEASON LIKE WE DID TODAY IS JUST RIDICULOUi." - MINNESOTA QUARTERBACK ASAD-ABDUL KHALIQ ON THE GOLDEN GOPHERS' LOSS, WHICH KILLED MINNESOTA'S BOWL HOPES. NEW A WEEKEND'S BEST BLACKOUT: No. 15 South Carolina had been hyping Saturday's game against No. 3 Florida as the biggest home game in South Car- olina's school history. To commemorate the occasion, 84,900 Gamecocks fans filled Williams-Brice Stadium completely dressed in black. The goal was to intimidate Florida. So, what hap- pened? Gators quarterback Rex Grossman threw three more touchdown passes as Florida flogged South Carolina, 54-17. WHAT COVER JINX?: Until Saturday's game, Oregon State had been just another victim of the Sports Illus- trated cover jinx. The magazine picked the Beavers to win the national title, and Ore- gon State responded with a 3-5 start. But the Beavers finally flexed some muscle against No. 8 Washington on Saturday. Ken Simonton's three first-quarter touchdowns put the Huskies in a hole that they couldn't recover from. Oregon State blew out Washington, 49-24, in effect killing the Huskies' BCS hopes. STATE OF EMBARRASSMENT: Michigan State has a habit of pulling a huge upset and then going in the tank. This year is no different. After playing out of their minds in a 26-24 win over Michigan, the Spartans allowed 489 rushing yards on Saturday against Indiana. The Hoosiers stunned Michigan State, 37-28. The big play is a 15-yard pass interference penalty against Minnesota. The penalty gives Michigan the ball at the Golden Gophers' nine-yard line. Two plays later, B.J. Askew scores from five yards out. Michigan 7, Minnesota O Second Quarter: Michigan is driving for another touchdown, but John Navarre is intercepted in the endzone on fourth-and-goal from the Golden Gophers' one-yard line. Minnesota takes over at its own 20 and drives 80 yards in nine plays to tie the score. Asad-Abdul Khaliq hits Ron Johnson for a 35-yard gain on the first play, and the two connect again for a 15-yard touchdown. Michigan 7, Minnesota 7 On Minnesota's next possession, the Golden Gophers are forced to punt from deep in their own territory. Tyrece Butler breaks through the line and blocks Preston Gruening's kick, which gives Michigan the ball at the Minnesota five-yard line. Two plays later, Askew scores his second touchdown, from two yards out. Michigan 14, Minnesota 7 With 40 seconds left in the half, Michigan sets up for a 35-yard field goal. But Minnesota blocks the kick, and the Golden Gophers recover at their own 40-yard line. Minnesota drives 37 yards in 36 sec- onds. With four seconds left in the half, Dan Nystrom nails a 40-yard field goal. Michigan 14, Minnesota 10 . Third Quarter: The Wolverines start out fast and seize the momentum. Todd Howard returns the opening kickoff 54 yards, putting the ball at Minnesota's 40- yard line. Five plays later, Michigan scores when Calvin Bell takes the ball on a reverse and runs, untouched, 19 yards into the endzone. Michigan 21, Minnesota 10 On its next possession, Michigan scores again. The Wolverines use 6:17 to go 69 yards in 11 plays, and Hayden Epstein kicks a 41-yard field goal to cap off the drive. Michigan 24, Minnesota 10 Fourth Quarter: Michigan gets the ball on its own 42 with 2:26 left in the third quarter. Marquise Walker catches a 24-yard pass and takes a reverse 18 yards, which puts the ball deep in Minneso- ta territory. On the second play of the fourth quarter, Chris Perryscores from five yards out for the game's final points. Michigan 31, Minnesota 10 EAST LANSING (AP) - Antwaan Randle El passed for a mere 51 yards and no touch- downs Saturday against No. 22 Michigan State. No matter. Randle El, a fifth-year senior, ran for 149 yards and a score in Indiana's 37-28 victory. The Hoosiers (3-3 Big Ten, 3-5 overall) amassed 489 yards on the ground, including a 251-yard, thre6-touchdown effort by running back Levron Williams. "We were prepared to play Michigan State, and we've got the best running game in the Big Ten," Williams said. "We can do this to anyone" Randle El became the NCAA Division I-A career rushing leader among quarterbacks, and fullback Jeremi Johnson added 96 yards and a touchdown. "We feel like we can move the ball on any- one," Randle El said. "The only thing that can stop us is our own stupid penalties and r' turnovers." "It's (the record's) a huge accomplishment, but I'm only going to celebrate until 4:30 tomorrow," Randle El said. "After that, it's all about Penn State (next week's opponent). I can enjoy this after my career." Michigan State (3-3, 5-3), which was com- ing off an emotional 26-24 win over Michi- gan, had won the last four meetings against Indiana. "We didn't play with the fire that Indiana did," Michigan State coach Bobby Williams said. "They had a lot more emotion than us." Indiana entered the game as the Big Ten leader in rushing offense, scoring offense, total offense and turnover margin. The Hoosiers took control of the Old Brass Spittoon, which has been awarded to the wn- ner since 1950. Randle El held the Spittoon in his arms during a postgame news confer- ence. ILLINOIS 33, PENN STATE 28 - Another miserable start, another comeback victory for Illinois Illinois overcame two Penn State kick returns for touchdowns by intercepting four passes in a 33-28 victory Saturday. "We showed heart and character. Our guys did not panic," coach Ron Turner said. The Illini (5-1, 8-1) may not have, but their fans were close to it after Larry Johnson returned a kickoff 97 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with 3:29 remaining. It was the only touchdown of the second half for the Nittany Lions (2-4, 3-5). Illinois got the ball back on its own 20. After two incompletions, Kurt Kittner found Brandon Lloyd open on the sideline for a 30- yard completion and hit Aaron Moorehead for 13 yards. Illinois then ran the ball five straight times, the last a 13-yard touchdown run by Rocky Harvey for the winning score with 1:19 to go. "This team has the attitude that they're not going to be denied no matter what happens, no matter what is thrown at them," Turner said. "Our guys get stronger as the game goes on and they keep wearing on people." OHIO STATE 35, PURDUE 9 - Steve Bellis- ari threw three touchdown passes, and Ohio State's defense intercepted three- passes- and forced two safeties as the Buckeyes beat Pur- due 35-9 Saturday. Ohio State (4-2, 6-3) can still share the conference title by winning its final two games. The Buckeyes play host to Illinois, then play at rival Michigan. Bellisari has been booed at home all season for his mediocre performances. For the sec- ond straight game, however, he seemed to make all the right moves. . He completed 14 of 20 passes for 263 Levron Williams ran for 251 yards and three touchdowns In Indiana's 37-28 win at Michigan State. yards without an interception. His touchdown throws - all in the second half-- covered 53 yards to Michael Jenkins, 13 yards to Ben Hartsock, and 7 yards to Chris Vance. Vance had the biggest receiving day of his career, catching seven passes for 138 yards. Jonathan Wells carried 21 times for 101 yards and a touchdown. Purdue (3-3, 5-3), which came in ranked last in the Big Ten in offense, struggled all day. Quarterback Brandon Hance completed just 10 of 22 passes for 122 yards and was intercepted by Donnie Nickey, Cie Grant and Derek Ross. Bowling, anyone? With two games left in the Big Ten season, the conference championship is still very much up for grabs. Three teams - Michigan, Illinois and Ohio State - still have a chance to win the title, depending on which of several scenarios comes to pass over the next couple of weeks. Wisconsin's Lee Evans 5- Big Ten 7-2 overall MICHIGAN WILL WIN THE TITLE IF: the Wolverines can win their final two games. It's that simple for Michigan. If the Wolverines can win at Wisconsin this Saturday and then defeat Ohio State the fol- lowing weekend, Michigan will win the Big Ten title and will receive the conference's BCS bid. b 4-2 Big Ten 6-3 overall OHIO STATE WILL WIN THE TITLE IF: the Buckeyes can win their final two games. Although Ohio State is cur- rently third in the Big Ten, the Buckeyes play Illinois and Michigan in their last two games. If it wins out, an 8-3 Ohio State squad will be head- ed to the BCS in coach Jim Tressel's first season. 5-1 Big Ten S8-1 overall ILLINOIS WILL WIN THE TITLE IF: a few things happen. First off, Illinois has to win its last two games - at Ohio State this Saturday, and home versus Northwestern the fol- lowing week. In addition, Illi- nois needs Michigan to lose once since the Wolverines own the head-to-head tiebreaker with Illinois. WHO'S NEXT: WISCONSIN The Badgers can look great; their come- back win at Ohio State is a good example. But Wisconsin can also look terrible, as evidenced by a 42-28 home loss to Michi- gan State. Which Wisconsin team will show up this week? Coach Barry Alvarez might not even know. Regardless, the Badgers are trying to end a three-game losing streak against Michigan. As for the Wolverines, this trip to Camp Randall Stadium is their last road game of the season. Michigan needs to win this game if it wants to maintain its dreams of a Big Ten championship and a BCS bowl bid. BIG TEN STANDINGS MARJORIE MARSHALL/Daily Michigan Is two wins away from a Big Ten championship. Yikes. I That's the only word that could describe this week's poor showing in Staff Picks. Goodstein won with an 8-7 record, although he gets the Ass-Clown of the Week award for incorrectly typing in the Washington-Oregon State game. When Goodstein typed up these staff picks for last week's Football Saturday, he made Washington the home team (the error has been cor- rected). All four writers picked Washington, and three of them went so far as to STAFF PICKS WEEK 10 SEECTIONS ALL PICKS MADE AGAINST THE SPREAD. CORRECT PICKS IN BOLD.
