UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ROIWING TEAM Invites all ATHLETES to compete for Michigan in the 2001-2002 season (no experience necessary). But this past Friday, the athletic department announced a major change in the makeup of two club sports, a change that should keep such things from happening again. Effective immediately, Athletic Director Bill Martin has implemented a new tier for sports competition, the "club-varsity" level. The new classification falls between the two original tiers of club and varsity sports and is intended to ele- vate several sports that officials said deserve extra recognition. Starting this year, the men's rowing and lacrosse teams are the inaugural club-varsity teams, selected based on the two teams' success on the national level. Greg Hartsuff, coach of the men's rowing team, had been among those lobbying for the change for several years. "One of our goals for the change of status has been achieved with Bill Martin's blessing,"he said. To the casual observer, there will be few noticeable differences between this season's team and those of past years. Despite the new title, the competition will be the same and the competitions should play out the same for the most part. But to the athletes and coaches that pledge their time and effort to their respective teams, the change is a welcome one that is long overdue. "I think it's great," Carl Enroth, a member of the rowing team said. "It's something that our whole team feels is incredibly important." Despite the change, most of the responsibility for raising money will still rest in the hands of the team itself. But the hope is that the new title will help to improve the teams' performance. "It's mainly a psyche thing." Hartsuff said. "There is a stigma attached to being a club in that it's less serious. Just the simple change in status is going to be huge. "This is a big, big philosophical change." All those involved said they expect the new classifi- cation to impact the team's credibility and increase the ability to perform on the national level. Because club sports are, to a great extent, walk-on programs, it is up to the team members to bring in peo- ple to tryout. But with the new elevated status, coaches and play- ers are expecting more publicity which will then lead to more recruiting. "We've always sort of hit the roadblock with the media," Hartsuff said. "This is going to impact our recruiting.' And all of this change, for the time being is costing the athletic department nothing. "There will be no additional financial contribttioti," Martin said. Instead, the new status will be seen as a progressive movement that should at some point lead to a more competitive environment that should translatei more successful program. Last year, the rowing team was able to raise $125,000, with very little of it coming from the athletic department. But over the course of the season, the team spent in the neighborhood of $150,000. It got so bad that the team found itself borrowing boats from Trinity College to use in the national cham- pionships. So while the teams will not be suddenly handed money by the athletic department the expectation is that as the team improves, money will come in. Basically, the thinking is that with the new status will come media attention, leading to easier recruiting. With better players will come more success and'suc- cess has been known to bring in quite a fan base. And with a supportive fan base, fundraisers should be able to bring in much more money, thereby accom- plishing the original goals.
