The Michigan Daily - SportsMonday - October 22, 2001 - 3B Paterno matches the Bear's wins record RAPHAEL GOODSTEIN EVANSTON (AP) - Joe Paterno needed help from an unlikely hero - a freshman backup quarterback - in the final two minutes Saturday to finally tie the major-college coaching record. Called off the bench for the first time with 1:39 remaining, Zack Mills threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Eric McCoo with 22 seconds to go as previ- ously winless Penn State rallied for a 38-35 upset of then No. 2 Northwest- *ern. Paterno tied Bear Bryant for most Division I-A victories with 323, and can surpass Bryant next week against Ohio State, although Saturday's dra- matics will be hard to top. Entering the game averaging just eight points a game and with the nation's worst rushing offense, Penn State (1-3 Big Ten, 1-4 overall) enjoyed a productive afternoon against North- western's porous defense. In coming from behind five times, the Nittany Lions piled up 501 yards total offense, including a season-high 213 on the ground, and exceeded their previous point total of 31 in one game. Mills, a redshirt freshman, was sum- moned early in the subsequent game- winning, 69-yard drive after junior Matt SennecA, enjoying a career game, was knocked out on a jarring tackle. Penn State had the ball on its own 48, second and 10. He promptly completed 5 of 8 passes for 54 yards, including the game-win- ner to McCoo near the goal line on the left side on a first-down play. Senneca had career-best totals of 20- of-39 passes for 234 yards, threw a 16- yard touchdown to McCoo and had the first two rushing TDs of his college career, each from a yard out. NORTH CAROLINA 38, CLEMSON 3: Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers was tired of hearing about Clemson's Woodrow Dantzler. So he and the Tar Heels shut down the talk where it counted most - on the field. Peppers had a remarkable intercep- tion and North Carolina held Clem- son's Heisman hopeful to one of his worst games with 118 yards in the Tar Heels 38-3 victory over then 13th ranked Tigers on Saturday. "He had 900-something yards the past two games but we're better than that," said Peppers, the 6-foot-6, 285 pound end. "Our defense is better than that." They proved it against Clemson (2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference, 4-2 ) to win their fifth straight after opening 0-3. Peppers tipped Dantzler's pass and lunged for the interception, which led to the first of Bosley Allen's two touch- down catches. The rest of the time, North Carolina (4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, 5-3) never gave Dantzler the chance to dazzle them like he did Georgia Tech and North Carolina the past two games. Durant was 11-for-11 for 97 yards. He threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Allen following Pepper's interception and rushed for scores of five and one yard in the second half. Curry, before leaving with a left hamstring strain in the third quarter, ran for 82. yards and passed for 109, including a 48-yard touchdown to Bosley as the Tar Heels led 21-3. North Carolina, led by Peppers, held the ACC's top offense to 209 yards less than half its 455-yard average. Dantzler was held to 36 yards rush- ing and 8-of-18 passing for 62 yards in the opening half. He was 2-of-7 for 13 yards and had 7 yards rushing in the third quarter before Simmons came in. "They did some things because of their defensive ability," Bowden said. "A lot of it was them, they made it tough to execute." either team wins out. This leaves only Miami (Fla:) and Virginia Tech ahead of Michigan. The Hokies and Hurricanes play each other Dec. 1, in Blacksburg, Va. Michigan still has a legitimate hope of playing in the national title game, the Rose Bowl. Now before you reserve a hotel in the Paradise City, remember, Michi- gan needs to win out. Two years ago, a one-loss Michi- gan team was in a similar position of needing to win out to have a chance at the national title game. Michigan blew a 20-point lead to Illinois and settled for the Orange Bowl. In 1992, Michigan had national title dreams dashed in the second-to- last week of the season, when it tied an inferior Illinois team. 1985 was more of the same. The top-ranked Wolverines blew a game late in the season to Chip Lohmiller and Minnesota. But this Michigan team just might be different. First and foremost, there's no pressure to win the national title. Many fans looked at last year's team, with all the talent it had, and realizedthat it still finished with three losses. So how could this team be so much better? Michigan's schedule is a lot easier than it was last year. Top-to-bottom, the Big Ten is Lafayette. Iowa, the Wolverines' opponent this week, is 5-2 but hasn't beaten a legitimate Division I team in the last three years. Now, some of you are probably thinking "why on Earth would I write this column? I'm probably just jinxing the team." I'm sure Coach Carr is thinking this. I used to think like this, until 1997. Champions aren't jinxed by columns. If this team has what it takes to win it all, columns won't get in its way. Then again, Michigan has only played one team ranked in the top 20, and lost that game, so this team just might be pulling a Virginia Tech - fooling fans into thinking it's good by beating bad teams. The Hokies seem to do this every year, most notably two years ago, when they went undefeated until playing Florida State in the national title game where they were humiliat- ed. If this is the case, Michigan will get what it deserves on Jan. 4. But until then, I'm going to enjoy watching good teams play each other - and watching Michigan climb the polls. That's probably because they have this guy named DeShaun Foster. But Paus was the one, not Foster, who lit up California this past week- end. Paus was 13-of-16 for 270 yards and three touchdowns. Paus hasn't thrown an interception in 189 attempts. GIBSON BREAKS 59-YEAR OLD RECORD: Georgia Freshman wide receiver Fred Gibson caught nine passes for 201 yards in the Bulldogs 43-29 vic- tory against Kentucky. Gibson broke Georgia's 59-year-old record for receiving yards in a game. THE DOMANATOR: Brigham Young quar- terback Brandon Doman has always been known to his teammates as a fiery, loud, and sometimes obnox- ious team leader. Some may say he's annoying, but one can't deny that he's led BYU to an unbeaten season thus far. Doman completed 20-of-32 for 338 yards and four touchdowns in Brigham Young's 63-33 rout of Air Force. HARRINGTON GOOD, BUT NOT GOOD ENOUGH: Joey Harrington, the "Cap- tain Comeback" of college football, couldn't do much to stop Stanford's 49-42 upset of No. 5 Oregon.
