NORTHERN MICHIGAN:
After finishing tied for fifth in the
CCHArstandings last season, Northern
Michigan coach Rick Comley feels
that his team has a legitimate chance at
contending for the CCHA title.
Comley, the only coach in Northern
Michigan's 26-year hockey history,
believes that the strength of his team
will lie among the juniors and seniors.
Northern Michigan will have 12
returning juniors and seniors on its ros-
ter.
At forwardjuniors Bryce Cockburn.
Terry .Harrison and Chris Gobert
should shoulder the offensive load for
the Wildcats. Cockburn was last sea-
son's leading goal scorer on the team
with 21.
Defensively, Comley has confidence
that junior Jimmy Jackson could
potentially be one of the best in the
nation.
In goal, the Wildcats had to deal
with the loss of their goalie from last
season Dan Ragusett. Despite this key
loss, Comley feels . that sophomore
Craig Kowalski could potentially be
the permanent goaltender for the tearn.
"Every year is a new challenge for
our team because the league really has
grown tremendously," Comley said.
"More and more teams have the oppor-
tunity to challenge the top teams in the
conference."
BOWLING GREEN:
The Falcons finished 2000-2001
with a bang - upsetting No. 2 Miami
in their best-of-three first-round series
and losing a hard-fought battle to even-
tual CCHA tournament champion
Michigan State, 2-1.
Bowling Green finished 16-19-5 last
season, making their series victory
over Miami even more important for
the team's confidence going into this
season.
"Last year we were in an awful lot of
close games," Bowling Green coach
Buddy Powers. said. "We just couldn't
get the goal when we needed it. We
kept preaching to our guys that if they
hang in there it was going to turn
around. They had a tough time believ-
ing that when we got into February. It
would have been really easy for them
to fold up. but they didn't."
The Falcons return 14 letter-winners
from last year's team, which means that

eight freshmen will join the squad.
Luckily for Bowling Green, senior
captain Greg Day, who tallied 40
points last season, and senior alternate
captain Scott Hewson return to lead the
offense.
ALASKA-FAIRBANKS:
It was clear to everybody in the
room. Alaska-Fairbanks coach Guy
Gadowsky was full of frustration after
receiving a slap in the face from the
media by being voted last in the CCHA
preseason media poll..
"I couldn't help noticing, it wasn't
reflected in the polls, but we made a lot
of strides last year," coach Guy
Gadowsky said. "We had four more
points than we have ever had in th
CCIA."
As far as its team goes, Alaska-
Fairbanks will rely heavily on their
three returning seniors to lead the
team, but expect most of its offensive
production to come from junior Bobby
Andrews.
Andrews led the team in every major
statistical category including points
(25) and goals (13).
Gadowsky also points to the perfor-
mance of his sophomore class as an
indication for how his team will do this
year.
FERRIS STATE:
It is now a reality in college hockey
that there is no guarantee top players
will stay around for all four years of
their eligibility.

That is exactly what happened to
them this summer when All-CCHA
second team goalie Phil Osaer decided
to leave the team for the St. Louis
Blues organization.
Coach Bob Daniels is now left with
two freshmen goaltenders, Mike
Brown and John DeCaro to replace
Oscar.
"What was a strength is now, I
wouldn't say a weakness, but a ques-
tion mark," Daniels said. "Ideally I
would like to split our two goaltenders.
I don't think I want to throw it on one
or the other."
This will make the return of five
defensemen, easily their deepest posi-
tion, even more important to the transi-
tion of the young goalies. The defense
will be led by senior Chad McIver,
who is among the best defensive'
defensemen in the CCHA, and two-
way player Troy Milam.
"We're going to explore opportuni-
ties of creating more offense," Daniels
said of his team's outlook. "However,
at no time do I want us to veer from our
philosophy of playing strong team
defense."
NOTRE DAME:
Attention, focus and order.
Three things that were missing from
the Notre Dame hockey team last sea-
son.
Coach Dave Poulin is determined
not to let the vices of last season carry
into the 2001-2002 campaign. He
decided for the first time, at the advice

of Michigan coach Red Berenson, to
keep his team in South Bend over the
spring to build camaraderie.
"We had 17 out of 18 players there
all summer so I think that is going to be
substantially significant both from a
physical and a bonding standpoint,"
coach Poulin said of his teams outlook.
"People are going to see a much hun-
grier team out there," Poulin said.
"When you go through a year like that
you certainly have an appreciation for
it."
Returning for the Irish will be senior
David Inman and a sophomore class
that was thrust into the role of offen-
sive leaders. Comprised of Rob
Globke, Aaron Gill and Brett Lebda,
all of whom had 26 points last year, the
sophomore class should continue their
growth and become even stronger.
LAKE SUPERIOR:
After finishing last in the CCHA
last season, the Lakers will enter the
season with a new man at the helm.
