Football Saturday
Year in, year out, Football Saturdays typify what makes Ann Arbor special.
That feeling of excitement as the game approaches; that smell of bratwursts
cooking at every other tailgate; that mass of students, alumni and fans that
make Hoover Street impassible by car; that overbearing ecstacy of a late-game
drive by the Maize and Blue to lock up the win; that unending grief that results
from a last-second Purdue field goal to win the game - Fall Saturdays stop life
in the town and focus all eyes on Michigan Stadium.
Six or seven Saturdays each year last for 52 weeks. When that last game ends
and Michigan Stadium closes its doors for another season, fans get ready - be
it 38 or two weeks away - for another chance to sit in the bleachers, to feel
the mammoth structure shake, to pump their fists in the air and shout, at the
top of their lungs but a volume inaudible, "Hail! to the Victors, valiant!"
This year, like in years past, The Michigan Daily will bring you all that there is
to know and all that you want to know about Michigan football. We'll take you
to Seattle, to State College, to Iowa City, East Lansing and Madison. And if you
can't be there yourself, we'll be in Michigan Stadium, feeling the excitement,
smelling the tailgates and tying up Hoover Street. And when the day is done,
and Football Saturday turns into your average Sunday, we'll be telling you all
about it.

As most of us know, Hollywood would like us
to believe that it can capture the college experi-
en'ce and regurgitate it back out glamorized and
inspired, awaiting our viewership. Of course,
rarely does this filmed reality come close to
grasping the truth, a la "Felicity" (Does anyone
actually fall for their
Resident Advisor?). We have
learned, and quite quickly,
that college isn't "Animal
Undeclared House," nor is it "Revenge
of the Nerds" Instead, our
FOX college experiences are as
varied as the genres of
Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. movies and television shows
that would like us to believe
that it is our "life" that they
are depicting.
A shining light through
the dark has finally appeared
on the small screen, and
although it cannot be classi-
fied as the absolute truth, "Undeclared" captures
the college "experience" that most other shows
have been missing. Finally, FOX has parted the
waves of teen dreck that have enveloped our sens-
es (thanks in large part to the WB) and produced
6-3 295 Fr
an extremely intelligent comedy about the best
four years of one's life.
The father of this brainchild is Judd Apatow,
whose crowning glory was the critically
acclaimed, but now defunct "Freaks and Geeks."
"Freaks and Geeks" presented high school life in
a fresh perspective, presenting teen angst with
intelligence instead of just for comedic laughs.
Apatow now dares to depict the life of a college
freshman with the same feelings of rebellion and
rejection that garnered him acclaim in the begin-
ning.
"Undeclared" stars Jay Baruchel ("Almost
Famous") as Steve Karp, a geeky and naive fresh-
man at the University of North Eastern
California. Looking forward to starting anew and
away from his awkward high school identity,
Steve is ready, willing and able to kick start his
college career- without a major of course. After
the goodbye lecture from dear old dad, Steve
jumps into the mass that is affectionately called
"move-in" full of overzealous parents with video
cameras and students overridden with anxieties.
Entering his room, Steve encounters suitemates
Ron (Seth Rogan, a "Freaks and Geeks" alum and
"Undeclared" writer) and Marshall (Timm Sharp)
playing a drinking game probably developed to
break up the monotony of"Hi, my name is so and
so, what's your major?"-type conversation.
Before Steve can even unpack, his roommate
SEP
Lloyd, a suave Brit,
informs him about
the party they are
having that night. Of
course, part can
mean only oihing
... wonn.
What ensues is
one mishap after
another on the
adventure to finding
women for the party.
While Lloyd douses
the ladies with his The cast of "Undeclared" be
uncanny charm, the
other three are basically inept when it comes to
the opposite sex. Pretty soon Steve is just asking
anyone, including cute frat boys. (In an interest-
ing twist, the frat boy Steve asks to the party is, in
fact, Tom Welling, the new Superman on the
WB's "Smallville.")
While the boys play, the new girls are situating
themselves into their new freedom. Lizzie (Carla
Gallo) obsessively adorns her dorm walls with
pictures of her boyfriend Eric (Jason Segel,
another "Freaks and Geeks" alum), but secretly
yearns for a life without restraint.
Her roommate Rachel (Monica Keena,
"Dawson's Creek"), is given to panic attacks, but
eventually learns to deal with her new situation.

Satellite, P.U.D.; Atlantic Recoras
By Keith N. Dusenberry
For the Daily
Do you love Jesus, but still want to
break stuff? Or perhaps you wear a cruci-
fix necklace and sport some natty dreads?
In either case, you'll love that Christian
band P.O.D. brings the pain in G-rated
nuggets of scripture-laced rapcore.
Equally suited to Sunday School weekend
retreats (Counselor: "Turn off that heathen
noise!" Camper: "But Reverend, they're
screaming for Jesus!") and MTV's "Total
Request Live," P.O.D.'s latest release
Satellite proves that rapcore should have
ended the day Zach de la Rocha turned in
his copy of the Anarchist Cookbook.
If you watch "TRL," and I'll ask PO.D.
to pray for you if you do, then you have
seen the video for this record's first single,
"Alive." Their previous album being their
first on a major label, the boys got a taste
of sellout success and now love the main-
stream so much that they'll do anything to
get their video played on MTV If you
catch one of those "TRL Uncensored"
specials and you look carefully, you can
actually see PO.D. performing fellatio on
Carson Daly during the commercial
breaks. I swear that this band (comprised
of a "normal" white guy, a black guy, an
"alternative" dreadlocked white dude and
a Hispanic guy) was cast by "The Real
World" producers. All that's missing is the
Asian chick.
And all that's missing from the music
on this album is anything interesting. Most
of this schlock, like "Boom" and the title
track, sounds like what would happen if
311 got roughed up in an alley - they
would still suck, but they would have just
a little more gravel in them. I can hardly
mention tracks such as "Youth of a
Nation," where the most boring of Limp
Bizkit songs somehow mates with a chil-
dren's choir and drones on about in-school
violence; or the unspeakable offense of
"Without Jah, Nothin"' which morphs
from "oldskool" punk into the worst reg-
gae since Ziggy Marley thought he could
write his own songs. The rest of Satellite '
tracks proffer banality beyond the limits of
even the most brain dead ignoramus'
patience.
Look - your little brother and Ned
Flanders dig this record on those
"naughty" nights when they stay up past
ten drinking Kool Aid and watching
Howard Stern. Hardcore.
Yeah, though you walk through the val-
ley of the shadow of shitty music, thou
shalt not be tempted to buy this album.
Amen.
