AA/EOE Penn State's Senneca expected to be back STATE COLLEGE (AP) - Penn State quarterback Matt Senneca is expected to return for next week's game against Virginia after an arm injury sidelined him for most of the season opener against Miami. But starting linebacker Derek Wake will miss the rest of the season because of a torn ligament in his left knee. Senneca received a minor nerve injury near his right elbow in the first quarter of Saturday's 33-7 loss, said Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, Penn State's director of athletic medicine. Senneca returned briefly in the sec- ond quarter but did not play in the sec- ond half. He completed 1 of 7 passes for 1 yard. Penn State is off this weekend and plays Sept. 13 at Virginia. Twenty-one-year old pitcher throws no-no SAN DIEGO (AP) - Bud Smith sat in the St. Louis dugout and talked hitting with Mark McGwire. Nothing unusual about that. Except Smith, a 21-year-old rookie, was three outs away from a no-hitter. "We've got no room down there because of the September callups," Smith said. "So I was sitting next to Big Mac talking about hitting so it would take my mind off the no-hit- ter." Ignoring baseball superstition, Smith became the 16th rookie in mod- ern history and the 18th since 1900 to throw a no-hitter, beating San Diego 4-0 in the second unlikely no-no against the Padres this season. Although he admitted that he was nervous, Smith looked as poised as a veteran. "I was shaking out there knowing that I was;.going for a no-hitter. I was going on adrenaline," Smith said. Smith was in the right place for an unexpected no-hitter. His mother, stepfather and 14 other immedia family members were at the game, plus 10 high school buddies. "I started thinking about the no-hit- ter about the sixth or seventh inning," Smith said. "I knew I had the stuff to do it." Smith, making his 11th career start, became the first rookie to throw a no- hitter since the Cardinals' Jose Jimenez did it in a 1-0 win again* Arizona on June 25, 1999. He ended it by fielding Phil Nevin's hard comebacker, pumping his fist and running halfway to first base before flipping to Albert Pujols for the final out. "I threw him a changeup and he hit it right to me, but I didn't know I had the ball. When I felt it in my glove, I wanted to run it over to first base before I threw it to make sure it wou get there." Smith and Pujols hugged, then the pitcher was mobbed by the rest of his teammates. Sampras and Agassi clash in quarter-finals NEW YORK (AP) - For his next trick, Pete Sampras takes his high-wi act at the U.S. Open into a matchup against Andre Agassi, no simple matter for the Grand Slam title record holder. Sampras eliminated two-time cham- pion Patrick Rafter, and Agassi ousted Roger Federer to set up a heavyweight quarterfinal today in America's Grand Slam. They are the two oldest players in the draw - Agassi 31, Sampras 30 - resuming their rivalry in a match th might be more appropriate for a fin instead of a quarter. Sampras leads the series 17-14 but Agassi has won the last three meetings, including two finals this year. The last time they met at the Open was in the 1995 final, which Sampras won in four sets. Their last Grand Slam meeting was in the Australian Open final last year, when Agassi won in five sets. The three losses to Agassi this yea are part of a 17-tournament slump Sam- pras has endured since setting a record by winning his 13th Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon in 2000. The drought led to a No. 10 seed at the Open, a tournament he has won four times. Bad boy Rodman in trouble in Newport NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) -= Former NBA forward Dennis Rodman has gotten on the bad side of Newport Beach police again, this time for allegedly spraying a restau- rant full of people with a fire extin- guisher. "It appeared that someone had said something that he didn't like," polic Lt. Doug Fletcher said of Sunday' incident at a Hooters in this beach- front city. Witnesses told police Rodman entered the restaurant about 5:45 p.m. carrying a fire extinguisher. He didn't appear to be intoxicated, Fletcher said. A P-~1- i 1JUC5 I UIt tntd LJULl W qA t YUU
