Rowing team holds
2001 open tryouts
The Michigan women's rowing
team is planning on holding an open
tryout for anyone interested interested
in making the team. The tryouts will be
held Monday through Friday at Cliff
Keen Areana with one-hour sessions
beginning at 3:15 p.m., 4:15, 5:15 and
6:15 each day.
The rowing team became a varsity

the nation the previous three years.

NEW YORK (AP) - Pedro Mar-

unless the Boston Red Sox get back into
playoff contention.
Martinez, who has made three starts
since coming off the disabled list, was
scratched from his scheduled start in
Tampa Bay on Wednesday. Red Sox
manager Joe Kerrigan said yesterday
the three-time Cy Young Award winner
would be evaluated start to start.
"Talking with him Saturday, he said
if this was a playoff scenario, he could
still pitch."
Boston had lost 12 of 13 going into
yesterday's game against the New York
Yankees, dropping 12 games behind
New York in the AL East and 12 games
behind Oakland in the wild card race.
When Kerrigan took over after Jimy
Williams was fired Aug. 16, the Red
Sox were two games back in the wild
card. They then lost 15 of their next 22.

The Michigan field hockey team
shut out Maine on Sunday 1-0 in the
consolation game of the Temple Invi-
tational.
Freshman Adrienne Hortillosa
scored the eame's only goal just
under 15 minutes into the second
half. It was her third goal of the sea-
son.
Goalkeeper Maureen Tasch made
five saves as she completed her
fourth shutout in the last five games.
Tasch has a perfect record on Sun-
day's with a 0.00 goals against aver-
age and a 3-0 record.
Michigan lost 2-1 to an undefeated
North Carolina squad on Saturday to
put them in position to play Maine.
Molly Powers recorded the only
goal for Michigan and her second of
the season.
Martiriez's season was finished.
"I think, that would be sending the
wrong message to our team if we did
that, saying our season's over, that we
have no chance at all."
He said Martinez would pitch again
this year only if the Red Sox draw with-
in two or three games of a postseason
berth going into the final week of the
season.
Martinez said last week his shoulder
still hurt, but Red Sox general manager
Dan Duquette said the three-time Cy*
Young Award winner was healthy. He
lasted only three innings Friday night
against the Yankees and said his arm
felt heavy.
Kerrigan and Martinez discussed the
rest of the season Saturday at Yankee
Stadium.
"We were basically in agreement,"
the manager said. "We thought it was
the right decision to make." w
Martinez is 7-3 with a 2.49 ERA in
his 18 starts for the Red Sox this season
and is winless in seven straight starts for
the first time since the first seven of his
major league career.
