. 2w a 2C - The Michigan Daily - KICKOFF 2001 -- Thursday, September 6, 2001 0 9 Thursday, September 6, 2001- KIcKoFF 2 Football Saturday 2001 Year in, year out, Football Saturdays typify what makes Ann Arbor special. That feeling of excitement as the game approaches; that smell of bratwursts cooking at every other tailgate; that mass of students, alumni and fans that make Hoover Street impassible by car; that overbearing ecstacy of a late-game drive by the Maize and Blue to lock up the win; that unending grief that results from a last-second Purdue field goal to win the game - Fall Saturdays stop life in the town and focus all eyes on Michigan Stadium. Six or seven Saturdays each year last for 52 weeks. When that last game ends and Michigan Stadium closes its doors for another season, fans get ready - be it 38 or two weeks away - for another chance to sit in the bleachers, to feel the mammoth structure shake, to pump their fists in the air and shout, at the top of their lungs but a volume inaudible, "Hail! to the Victors, valiant!" This year, like in years past, The Michigan Daily will bring you all that there is to know and all that you want to know about Michigan football. We'll take you to Seattle, to State College, to Iowa City, East Lansing and Madison. And if you can't be there yourself, we'll be in Michigan Stadium, feeling the excitement, smelling the tailgates and tying up Hoover Street. And when the day is done, and Football Saturday turns into your average Sunday, we'll be telling you all about it. The marching band exemplifies the winning spirit of Michigan football. 2001 MICHIGAN ROSTEI Enjoy. But, since it was the first game of the season, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr was hesitant to offer any resounding judgmeits on his quar- terback's performance. "I thought Navarre did a good job in the pocket," Carr said. "I thought his pocket presence was better, but we've FILE PHOTO got a long way to go." Navarre's switch from understudy to starter is accompanied by a tremen- R dous amount of pressure. Although current backup Spencer Brinton has 8 Fr some game experience from his time at 0 Sr San Diego State, it has a been a few 0 Fr years since he played Division I foot- 2 Jr ball. Third-stringer Jermaine Gonzales 3 Fr has virtually no game experience. 5 Fr Brinton and Gonzales each only 2 Jr received one snap in last Saturday's tilt. 2 Fr Clearly, the onus is on Navarre to play 5 Sr consistent, error-free football for a 8 Fr team with Big Ten championship aspi- 9 Sr rations. 7 Sr "I think I did an okay job getting in 8 Jr there and keeping the team going," 9 So Navarre said after the Miami game. 9 Fr "But, I've got some things to work on. 8 Jr There's some reads I missed, but that's 9 So expected for the first game. I've just 9 Sr got to go back, look at the film, and get 4 Fr them corrected." 0 Fr With so much seemingly stacked 6 Sr against him, it's important to remember 9 Sr that Navarre did get some playing time 9 Sr 3 Fr - 3 Jr 2 Sr 1 Fr 3 Fr 4 Fr 0 Sr ; 0 Fr 0 Jr 2 So 5 So 7 Jr 0 Fr 0 Fr 0 So 5 Fr y ~ 1 Fr 7 Jr 5 Fr 1 Sr 5 Fr JESSICA JOINSN/Daily John Navarre has a lot of pressure on him as he steps in for Drew Henson. last year. Navarre started four games while Henson was recuperating from an injury. Two of those contests - games against UCLA and Illinois - were on the road in hostile environ- ments. The lessons learned from those starts can only help Navarre as the Wolverines head to Seattle this week- end to take on defending Pac-10 cham- pion Huskies, whose home field has been dubbed "The House of Pain." "There's going to be some ups and downs," Carr said. "I've always said that experience is hard to get without suffering." Fresh input: Six newcome While Michigan lost more talent than any other school last year, it replaced a lot of it with this year's recruiting class, bringing in another top-five class. Incoming recruits rarely make seri- ous contributions, watch for these six to possibly get some time this year and develop into stars in upcoming sea- sons. Spencer Brinton: Brinton was the final piece of Michigan's blockbuster trade with San Diego State, a deal that netted the Aztecs Steve Fisher and Brandon Smith in exchange for Brinton and two conditional draft picks. Because Brinton served on a Mormon mission in South Africa last year, he never got to see Michigan or the other schools he considered trans- ferring to: Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Arizona. For Brinton, a 30-minute conversation with Michigan's coaching staff was all he needed. "In some ways he reminds me of Tom Brady," head coach Lloyd Carr said. "He's a left hander but he's got .a very good release, he's smooth and I know he's smart. Markus Curry: Curry, brother of junior strong safety Julius, played strong safety against Miami (Ohio) By Raphael Goodsteln Daily Sports Editor and will return punts as the season pro- gresses. Markus thought he was going to play for Michigan last year, but the University didn't admit him. Instead, he attended Valley Forge (Penn.) Prep School. Curry enrolled in January. "I think going to prep school was a tremendous experience for him," Carr said. "He's got everything you want: he's smart, he's tough, he's bigger than he appears to be, and he's going to get better and better." Curry was rated the nation's 18th best prospect by Super Prep Magazine. Braylon Edwards: Edwards will battle Tyrece Butler and Tim Massaquoi for the No. 3 starting receiver spot. The 6-foot-3, 200 pound Edwards, who hauled in two passes for 22 yards late in Saturday's win, will provide a big target for Navarre. As long as senior Marquise Walker and junior Ronald Bellamy stay healthy, Edwards will receive limited playing time, but if either gets hurt, expect Edwards to play more. Marlin Jackson:. Jackson was one of four blue-chip prospects Carr stole from Pennsylvania. Jackson saw a fair amount of play- ing time and finished with five tackles Saturday. He'll see most of his time in the dime package. Like Curry, Jackson will get a chance at returning punts.
