A familiar
destination, a new foe
Florida Citrus Bowl: No. 17 Michigan vs. No. 8 Tennessee Jan. 1, 1 p.m.
Late-season losses pit Varsity against Vols

When Charles Woodson won the Heis-
man Trophy in 1997, he became the first
predominantly-defensive player to claim
college football's top individual honor.
Woodson's victory sent shock waves
throughout the state of Tennessee, where
stunned Volunteers fans were left to ask,
"How could Peyton Manning not win?"
Tennesseans were so upset about a per-
ceived conspiracy in the Heisman voting
that Gov. Don Sundquist felt compelled to
demand a recount. Manning - who had
endeared himself to everyone in the col-
lege football world by staying in school for
four years - was gracious in defeat, but
he was in the minority.
So began one of the odder rivalries in
college football. Tennessee and Michigan
had never played, but fans of the two
schools already hated each other. The first
meeting between the schools will take
place on Jan. 1 when No. 8 Tennessee (7-2
SEC, 10-2 overall) takes on No. 17 Michi-
gan (6-2 Big Ten, 8-3 overall) in the Citrus
Bowl.'
"Playing, obviously, an outstanding Uni-
versity of Michigan team with all their
great football history, we're excited about
that," said Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer.
"I've been a great admirer of Lloyd Carr
and the job he's done there."
Both of these teams had chances to win
their respective conferences and earn Bowl
Championship Series bids, but neither
school was successful. Michigan blew its
shot at a piece of the Big Ten title when it
was upset at home by Ohio State, 26-20,
on Nov. 24. The loss handed the outright
conference title and an eventual Sugar
Bowl berth to Illinois.
Meanwhile, Tennessee is still licking its
wounds following its 31-20 loss to
Louisiana State in the SEC Championship
game Saturday. Had the Volunteers won,
they would be playing Miami (Fla.) in the
Rose Bowl for the national championship.
But Tennessee's loss dropped the Volun-
teers out of the BCS entirely, and they
were forced to settle for a Citrus Bowl bid
against the Wolverines, who will be mak-
ing their third trip to Orlando in four years.
"Well, it's great to be back in the Citrus
Bowl," Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said.
"We're looking forward to playing an out-
standing Tennessee team. The tradition
there is like our own, with a very proud
and long history of winning football. We're
looking forward to coming back to the
great city of Orlando. We've been in a lot
of bowls here and I don't think anybody
does it any better than the people in Orlan-
do."
There was a time when Tennessee was a
regular in the Citrus Bowl. At one point in
the mid-1990s, Tennessee made three trips
to the Citrus Bowl in four years, two with
Manning as the quarterback.
Manning's visits to Orlando were espe-
cially bittersweet, since they came as a
direct result of Tennessee's inability to beat
Florida. In 1995 and 1996, the Volunteers
went 10-1 during the regular season, but
losses to the Gators relegated Tennessee to
the Citrus Bowl. The low point for the Vol-
unteers may have come when Florida
coach Steve Spurrier quipped, "You know,
you can't spell Citrus without UT."
But despite the fact that neither Michi-
gan nor Tennessee really wants to be play-
ing in the Citrus Bowl this year, this has
the makings of a hotly-contested game.
The matchup has the Citrus Bowl execu-
tives more than a little excited.
"You can't imagine two more tradition-
filled and high-prestige teams and schools
than these two," Citrus Bowl executive
director Chuck Rohe said. "I think if you
would start the year saying we're going to
have Michigan and Tennessee playing in
our bowl game, it'd be the highlight of the
decade perhaps."
ALL-AMERICANS ALL OVER THE PLACE: This
year's Citrus Bowl opponents are well rep-
resented in the AP All-America teams,
released yesterday.
For Michigan, receiver Marquise Walker
and linebacker Larry Foote were named to
the second team.
The Volunteers, on the other hand,
placed two members on the first team, tail-
back Travis Stephens and defensive line-
man John Henderson.
Another Tennessee defensive lineman,
Will Overstreet, was named to the third
team.

Offense needs to find
rhythm in Citrus Bowl

After Tennessee fell to Louisiana
State Saturday night, it set up one of
the most intriguing matchups of the
bowl season - Michigan vs. Ten-
nessee in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1.
While both teams had their BCS
dreams dashed, they no doubt are look-
ing forward to finally facing each
other. For the Wolverines, the disap-
pointment of losing the Big Ten and
making a third appearance in the Cit-
rus Bowl in the past four years could
be partially alleviated with a victory
over the Volunteers.
But should Michigan lose, it will
drop its fourth game of the season to
give the Wolverines their worst record
since 1996.
MICHIGAN RUSHING OFFENSE vs. TEN-
NESSEE RUSHING DEFENSE: Michigan was
unable to move the ball on the ground
in its last two Big Ten games against
Ohio State and Wisconsin, accumulat-
ing just over 100 yards in both games
-nearly 50 yards below its average.
Meanwhile, Tennessee boasts the
nation's third-best rushing defense
with a run-stopping line led by John
Henderson and Will Overstreet.
Unless Michigan can find a running
game in next two weeks, the Volun-
teers shouldn't have a problem shutting
down B.J. Askew and company.
Advantage: Tennessee
MICHIGAN PASSING OFFENSE vs. TEN-
NESSEE PASSING DEFENSE: This season,
the Wolverines relied on wide receiver
Marquise Walker to provide the spark
on offense and at times bail them out
of a tricky third down. But by the end
of the season, the Michigan offense's
confidence took a hit when it could not
get the ball into Walker's hands.
Michigan has not gotten consistent
play from its quarterback - be it John
Navarre or Jermaine Gonzales - and
the offense has suffered because of it.
Tennessee's defense is not quite as
good in the backfield as it is up front,
but is still a presence. But Michigan's
performance this seasonehas shown
that it is its own worst enemy when it
comes to the passing game and, like
the running game, may not have
enough time to rectify the problems.
Advantage: Tennessee
TENNESSEE RUSHING OFFENSE VS.
MICHIGAN RUSHING DEFENSE: The Volun-
teers' Travis Stephens exploded against
Florida for 226 yards and two touch-
downs to lead his team to its first vic-
tory in "The Swamp" in 30 years.
But against Louisiana State in the
SEC Championship Game, Stephens
was nowhere to be found. He was held
to 37 yards, his lowest output of the
season.
Which Stephens will show up on
New Year's Day? Who knows, but Ten-
nessee's fate could be resting on his
shoulders.
Michigan holds the nation's eighth-
best rushing defense, but was lit up by
Ohio State's Jonathan Wells in its final
game of the season. Despite its let-
down against the Buckeyes, the
Wolverines' rushing defense just has
too much talent (see: Larry Foote, Vic-
tor Hobson and Shantee Orr) and
should be ready to rebound against the
Volunteers.
Advantage: Michigan
