A new variation of hockey for those lacking the skill to balance on metal blades is now sweeping the U.S. - Broomball. "Broomball is a sport that is strate- gically similar to hockey," club presi- dent Adam Wilson said. The game is played on a rink with larger goals. Instead of skates, the players wear shoes made of padded sponge-rubber to get traction on the ice. Specially designed brooms are used to move a ball, which is compa- rable to a small soccer ball. The brooms are made of solid molded rubber or corn-straw dipped in rubber. A raw form of broomball originated in Canada in the early 20th century. The sport has since gained recognition and is played all over North America, Italy, Germany, Russia, Japan and Australia. Wilson'and Mike Austin started the club sport at Michigan two years ago. "We decided to found the club because we played intramural and did- tockey' fun n't feel it was enough," said Wilson. Austin checked the Internet with hopes of finding a tournament that they could enter. They found one in Syracuse, so the two teamed up with three others and headed to New York. "We got slaughtered, but we got hooked," Wilson said. "We went to two more tournaments that first year and began the process to get club sport recognition." Club status was officially received last year. The team now practices at Yost Ice Arena. Using that surface requires at least club status to use the ice. Since ice time is limited, practices must be held Tuesdays at 1 a.m. "We're last on the list because we're the newest," Wilson said. "So we get the crap time." The team, which has grown-from 15 to 18 members, plans to attend four events in 2002. Next on the schedule is the 18th annualMolson Can-Am Tournament on Jan. 11 in Syracuse. The Molson Can-Am was the first tournament the team ever entered. The team also travels to Ontario, Cincinnati and Rtochester, N.Y. "Our goal is to win a tournament," Wilson said. "We've won games, but not tournaments." Why: Bies, a force inside the paint at 6-foot-3, did her biggest damage from the charity stripe. Her final two free throws were'the difference in a hard- fought 71-70 road win against Washington. She also scored 27 points and added 11 rebounds. Friday night against Washington State, she scored 18 points and had 8 rebounds. Bies SPORTS BRIEFS Crouch takes home the Heisman AP PHOTO Saturday, Eric Crouch became the first Nebraska quarterback to ever win the Heisman Trophy. Crouch beat out Florida quarterback Rex Grossman by just 62 points, the fourth closest margin of victory in the 67-year history of the Heisman. Now, thanks to a Tennessee loss in the SEC championship game, Crouch must prepare to lead the Cornhuskers into Pasadena for the national championship game against Miami. By The Numbers: Crouch ran for 1,115 yards and scored 18 rushing touchdowns. He also passed for 1,510 yards and seven touchdowns. He is one of only three major major college quarterbacks to finish with over 3,000 rushing yards andh 4,000 passing yards in a career. Play of the Year: In Nebraska's 20-10 win over Oklahoma on Oct. 27, Crouch caught a 67- yard touchdown pass from Mike Stuntz with 6:17 remaining in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for the Sooners. (AP) - George O'Leary was introduced as the new coach at Notre Dame yesterday and promised to lead the storied foot- ball program back to a position among the nation's best. O'Leary, who led Georgia Tech to five straight bowl games, replaced Bob Davie, who was fired a week ago. The Irish lost six or more games three times under Davie, whose 35-25 record gave him the third-worst winning percentage in Irish history. The oldest person ever hired as Notre Dame coach, the 55-year-old O'Leary was 52-33 in seven seasons at Georgia Tech. He.was introduced to a cheering crowd of several hundred people in the Joyce Center one week after Davie was fired in the same building. O'Leary told the crowd he consid- ered the job of Notre Dame coach to be one of the two best in sports, with the other being manager of the New York Yankees. "Obviously my job is twofold, to graduate our athletes and to win a lot of football games," O'Leary said. "I'm coming to Notre Dame to win games and win a lot of them. That's what it is all about." The Irish, who haven't posted a top 10 finish since 1993 or a national championship since 1988, hope that O'Leary can get Notre Dame quickly back among college football's elite pro- grams. Notre Dame President Edward Mal- loy said he was enthusiastic about the selection of O'Leary after meeting with him on Saturday in Atlanta. Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White said O'Leary met the standards he set in the search for a new coach - a proven winner who could return the Irish to national championship caliber. "He knows what championship foot- ball is about," White said. Van Gundy resigns, 'lost focus' as coach PURCHASE, N.Y. (AP) - Jeff Van Gundy resigned unexpectedly as head coach of the New York Knicks on Saturday, just as the team was playing its best basletball of the sea- son. The stunning deci- sion came a day after Van Gundy angrily ended practice early because he thought his players lacked intensity. He said he had been considering resigning since the finally decided to do so had "lost focus" as a I I I I summer and because he coach. Van Gundy told the players of his decision at their morning shootaround. Van Gundy took the Knicks to the playoffs in each of his first six sea- sons, including a trip to the 1999 NBA Finals and two trips to the East- ern Conference finals. Assistant Don Chaney coached New York to a 101-99 win over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night.
