The Michigan Daily - Monday, April 16, 2001 - 7A *-ORR 1Contnued from Page 1A revealed and a judgment will be made ,based on those facts'" Carr said. On- did ,_ot play in Saturday's intrasquad scrim- ,mage. Department of Public Safety spokes- woman Diane Brown said Orr and his ex-girlfriend, also a student, had been 'dating for several months. They were *possibly trying to break up but contin- ued to see each other. On March 4, Orr proposed having sex "one last time" in the victim's Stockwell Residence Hall room. "She said no. They had inter- course anyway" Brown said. ;_The victim "told Mr. Orr that she -deeded 'her space' in their relatiionship," according to the report. "She claimed she tried to push him off, but was unsuc- .cessful " The victim also said she spoke with *Orr by telephone after the incident. "She did tell him that she no longer wanted to be with him. He called on a continual basis during the evening time," the report said. In an 'e-mail to the victim following the reported incident, Orr wrote, "I was just thinking to myself and I violated something that I said I would never do,' the police report stated. The victim filed the report March 19, under advisement of her father. Orr turned himself into police last week after a warrant was issued. Brown said he has remained coopera- tive throughout the investigation. Provost Nancy Cantor, Vice President for. Student Affairs E. Royster Harper, and Athletic Director Bill Martin issued an official statement concerning the incident. "The University is investigat- ing the circumstance surrounding these charges and will pursue all appropriate disciplinary measures once the facts are known," the statement said. SENIORITIS Continued from Page IA counsels but only around 10 percent of the senior class exhibits behavior severe enough to result in a significant drop in grades. "We do try to explain to them, many times during their senior year, that if you don't perform up to a college's level that there are enough qualified candidates out there in the pool to take your place'" Vanderleest said. Vanderleest said she sees two main reasons for senioritis. "First, a senior thinks that I have been accepted to the university - I'm in,' or sometimes seniors think 'I've really worked hard in high school, now it's time for me to just have fun,"' she said. Although some students, like LSA sophomore Jyoti Kothavale, said they were unaware of the fact that their acceptance could be revoked by the Uni- versity for their senior grades, incoming freshman are notified of this in two separate ways. The initial acceptance letter the University sends out clearly states that "Enrollment is contingent upon the successful completion of your senior year and graduation' Also, in an information brochure sent to admitted students there is a section titled "Senior Year Is Important!" which explains that the University expects students' academic perfor- mance to be consistent with that which was pre- sented on their initial application to the University A system is used to follow up on students that have been accepted to the University, said Janet Mendler, manager of state and local news at Uni- versity News & Information Services. Near the end of the academic year, a letter is sent to high schools of all admitted students asking for reports of stu- dents' final grades. These grades are not a fluff check-up, but are very important to the University, Mendler said. "As soon as we get the final grade reports, they are immediately scrutinized to see if there are any major grade discrepancies,' Mendler said. Mendler said most high schools respond with students grades by early July, so it would be possi- ble for an admitted student to complete summer orientation and register for classes before they find out that admission has been revoked, although a student would definitely be informed of this deci- sion before classes begin in September. BUDGET Continued from Page 1A they did not want to carry money from the previous years' Berlin said. "If we stayed without carrying any money over we would have eliminated all capital purchases and all property purchases including police and fire necessities. Councilwoman Heidi Herrell (D-Ward III) said the surplus from the previous year's general fund is simply an estimate. "Every single year I've been on council there has beeny more money than they have expected," Herrell said. "We witt-to maintain the proper level of our rainy-day fu~nd" Hiefte said the city will be making an effort to ensure the general fund is no longer depleted for future years. "If we're going to stay as a viable competitive community which is what we need for high tech businesses, quality of life issues - all of this requires funding;' le said. "We need to watch out expenses very closely:' Councilman Stephen Hartwell (D-Ward IV) said the city needs to balance capital projects and departmental necessities by prioritizing what the city wants. "The drive is to become more productive with what we have;' Hartwell said.
