Saturday CAMP S CINEMA Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon See --hursday Michigan Theater. 4:30, By Mark Francescutti Daily Arts Writer Forget the latest clones of Friends, Jerry Springer and ER. Sitcoms, talk shows and hospital dramas are out - reality is in. In the "copy what's hot" world of television, network execu- tives recently added dozens of reality-based TV shows to their schedules with hopes of drawing ratings similar to that of Survivor -- the No. 1-rated smash of this past summer. More than 51 million people watched snake-like corporate trainer Richard Hatch win SI million in the final episode of the Robinson-Crusoe series that pitted 16 people on a deserted island. Now networks hope for similar numbers with reality shows of their own. The latest fad erupts this month with four new reality shows premiering - The Mole (Tuesdays 8 p.m. EST, ABC), Temptation Island (Wednesdays 9 p.m., FOX), Popstars (Fridays, 9 p.m., WB) and Survivor II (Thursdays 8 p.m., CBS). At issue for the networks: Can they reproduce the magic of Survivor with these new installments? CBS' follow-up Big Brother struggled in the ratings and often bored its viewing audience. Despite its lukewarm perfor- mance, the Eye plans to make another installment of the series, which locked contestants in a house to vie for 5500,000. Fox's reality show "Who Wants to Marry A Multi- Millionaire" caused more outrage and public scrutiny than a rat- ings boost when the marriage turned quickly into a sham. So why are the networks taking the risk? For one, reality TV shows are much cheaper to make. Instead of high-priced actors, the programs use regular civilians. Whereas an episode of ER can cost up to tens of millions ofdol- lars, most reality shows sometimes cost less than S1 million. Second, reality shows tend to attract what advertisers like See REALITY, Page 68 Tues Hosted by former ABC N respondent Anderson Co (above). The game format is almost exactly the same, as two tribes of eight contestants battle it out in the wild terrain of Australia. The teams compete in mental and physical challenges to earn immunity and rewards. With 10 castaways remaining the show combines the tribe into a single unit, when it's every- body for himself or herself. Rumor mill: As with the first series, many Survivor fans are already trying to predict the winner of the show. Using snap- shots of promos and previews, several people correctly guessed several of the voted off castaways. Now that produc- ers know we're looking, will they throw in Red Herrings?
