Bush Wants To Take Away A Woman's Right To Choose rally in s By Shannon Pettypiece Daily Staffreporter Supporters of LSA senior Ryan Hughes questioned the mission and ethics of the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities - formerly the Student Code of Conduct -- outside the Fleming Administration Building yester- day at a rally to support dropping Code charges against HuIghes. "The Code process isn't democratic and it should be, so what we are doing is bringing the people into it," Hughes said. "If the University is acting in place of my parents then I should be able to call them up and ask for money sometime." Ilughes is charged under the Code with vandalism and assault after an anonymous report to the Department of Public Safety that he spray-painted upport of, members and signs nelongimng to the g! roup of anti-gay protesters at February's Glay Pride Week Kiss-In on tiie Diia. The charges are being pursued even though neither the police nor the victims are pressing carges. Hughes denied comment on the issue of whether he was guilty, but did say the issue has been dealt with un fairly. "It's an unfair process. It's put me in double jeopardy. Even though the legal system says I'm scot-free the University has taken it into its own hands.'' ,Ilughes said. Office of Student Conflict Director Keith Elkin, who attended the rally to answer student questions regarding the Code, said the administration is unable to comment on the particular case against lughes because it would violate federal law and University policy. He u [, 4 3 n 3 . . k Hughes said the goal of the code is to help stu- dents, not punish them. "What we're trying to do is make an educational intervention," Elkin s'. "h's about caring about the students r d making sure the student is OK.". 7 Elkin also dismissed accusations tha' the University is acting in an authoritari- an manner. "We don't stand in place ot the parent. Your parents didn't yrovide the opportunity for a hearing in front of your peers when you got in trouble." 1 lughes' attorney, Jodi Masley, -said both the rally and her choice to defend Hughes is about fighting for student rights. "The University uses the Cots a hammer on students, especially inis case when criminal charges were not brought up," said Masley. "They get to be prosecutor, judge, executionerand if there's ajury they get to pick it." STAYING INS ANN ARBOIi THIS SUMMER? r DON'T GET BORED.
