The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 23. 2001 -- I NEUMAN ontinued from Page 1 White House spokesman Scott Stanel said he expects Neuman to eas- ily be confirmed by the Senate. "She is someone who has been a leader in secondary and elementary education,"Stanzel said. The suspect, identified by authorities as Jason I lof'fian, was shot in the jaw and buttocks, the most serious injuries stemming from the violence. Shotgun pellet wounds suffered by the students and teach- ers were not life-threatening, hospital and police officials said. Five other students and adults were treated for various other injuries, none of them serious. A 51-year-old man, who had chest pains while running to the scene to find his child, was in critical condition. Police also said a pregnant woman rushing to the campus went into labor. "There were no warning sigs," said senior Travis Peters, who had an algebra class with Iloflinan. "le wasn't an out- cast, no one made fun of him. ... As far as I know, he was like every other kid." Jiovani Guerrero, a junior who went to Granite IHfills with Hoffman last year and now attends a different school, said Hoffinan may have been upset about-not getting enough cred- its to graduate. FIGHT Continued from Page 1 Sports Information Director David Ablauf made a statement on behalf of the team, saying it's an internal team matter. "Every incident involving a student- athlete is evaluated on its merits or demerits -Bill Martin and Lloyd Can will handle this situation privately," Ablauf said. The amendment, Schmid said, is not an endorsement of drug use but rather -a move to replace the government's war on drugs with personal responsi- bility.;, "The -government isn't very good at the war on drugs they just aren't producing results," Schmid said. Included in the amendment are pro- visions to make possession of three ounces of marijuana or three plants legal as long as the drug is kept away from the children, cars and the public. "PRA doesn't legalize the sale of marijuana and there are many restric- tions with regard to having it in your home," Schmid said. "The main goL is to end prohibition because it is the black market for marijuana that leads to crime. not the marijuana itselF:' PRA also relieves the financial hur- den of punishing marijuana smokers, Strout said. "According to a survey conducted by the American Civil Lih- erties Union. 58 percent of people-say we shouldn't send marijuana smokers to jail," he said. "This amendment eliminates the waste of law enforce- ment resources that should be used for violent crimes." Petitioners will continue to collect signatures until Oct. 3. If the amend- ment makes it to the Michigan ballot. it will be the first time in state history that a marijuana referendum will go before voters. r r r *he michigan VOTING Continued from Page 1 anent candidate Mike Kaplan of the University Democratic Party.
