12 The Last Word

By Ryan Blay and Jeff Dickerson
Daily Arts Writers
Welcome to the 2001 Daily Arts
Television Tournamerit.
Over the next few weeks, in conjunc-
tion with the NCAA basketball tourna-
ment, we will take 65 of the greatest,
shows on TV (both current shows and
series repeating in syndication) and
emerge with one winner to be dubbed
TV's finest. A lot of quality shows just
failed to make the cut, but we feel that
what we have best represents what's on
TV at the moment.
Our rankings were based on Nielsen
ratings, popularity among us and the
attractiveness of the cast. We focused on
sitcoms and cartoons. News programs
and soap operas were excluded, despite
frantic efforts from the cast of "All My
Children" to weasel their way in.
Our number 65 seed, the Winthrop
of all TV shows, is "Saved By the Bell,"
which upset no. 64 "Dexter's Laborato-
ry" to eke its way into the tournament.
Dustin "Screech" Diamond manhan-
dled Didi at the small forward position
while Elizabeth Berkeley distracted
Dexter from coming to the aid of his
family. But now Zach, Kelly and Mr.
Belding hold the unenviable position of
facing the no. 1 rated sitcom in all the
land.
We, the TV staff need to hear from
you. It's your readership and your com-
ments that will make this ambitious
endeavor worthwhile. If you have opin-
ions on which teams should stay and

which should be booted out with shame,
please e-mail us. And if you have
thoughts on teams that were outra-
geously blocked from the tourney or
those who unfairly squeaked into it,
don't hesitate to post them on our forum
(michigandaily.comlforum).
Only one show shall be presented
with the coveted Elisabeth Filarski tro-
phy - we will steal her from her punk
football player boyfriend and literally
present her to the winning show's pro-
ducers.
If you feel the Olsen twins should
destroy the prisoners of "Oz" or if
"Gilmore Girls" deserves more acclaim
than "The West Wing, tell us. The bit-
ter war between Friends and Survivor II
is nothing compared to the harsh first
round matchups between "Iron Chef"
and "Emeril Live" and "Futurama" vs
"The Simpsons." Nobody else would
listen to your convoluted arguments
about why "Thundercats" should win it
all, but we would.
What must Joss Whedon be thinking
right now? His hit "Buffy the Vampire
Slayer" goes up against sophomore
"Angel" in a stake-to-stake battle. Laura
Flynn Boyle is no doubt pulling out her
hair deciding whether to lend her sup-
port to "Twin Peaks" or "The Practice."
The tournament was the collective
brainchild of the Daily TV staff, who
wanted to both express our love for tele-
vision and do something to overcome
the boredom of not having any sweeps
series to review.
Let the madness begin.
