The Michigan Daily - Thursday, March 8, 2001- 13A 'M' hopes to get healthy by tournent tournament for the second-consecu- tive year and third time in four years is no guarantee, but it is not too bold of a prediction either. With a record of 10-6 in the Big Ten and 18-l1 overall, www.womenscollegehoops.com has projected Michigan to be an eight- seed and even says it has a 100-per- cent chance of being given a bid. But Michigan coach Sue Guevara warned, "Nobody can predict what the committee is going to do." No matter if the Wolverines are going to the NCAA tournament or the WNIT, they need to overcome the dis- appointment of the loss to the Boilermakers in the Big Ten tourna- ment. "It's going to hurt for a couple of days but we're just going to have to get over it," Stephanie Gandy said. The Wolverines have more than just a couple of days to put the loss behind them. The team's first practice after the Big Tens was today, and the tourna- ment's earliest games are next Thursday. Guevara welcomes the long pause. "I think it's very helpful," she said. "The kids didn't get spring break last week. I think they need the time to heal, to rest, to get mentally ready, to get rejuvenated. I think they're pretty hungry to get back and I'll see that" today at practice. Michigan has had to bounce back from a couple of crushing losses this season. It dropped two in a row to Wisconsin and Iowa by margins of 33 and 21, respectively, in early January, and then a 22-point loss to Indiana in its second to last game. Both times, the Wolverines took their anger out on nationally-ranked Penn State to get back into the win column. "We kept talking about how big each of those games were and the first (game of the tournament) we play will be a big game," Guevara said. The first games have proved trou=' blesome in the recent past for Michigan. The Wolverines' dancing in the tournament has been a sort of hokey-pokey: Put your left foot in, take your left foot out. The two times Guevara has taken Michigan to the tournament in 1998 and 2000, it has" finished in first-round losses. It started with a close loss to Northwestern in Evanston, and quickly snowballed with two losses at home and two more losses on the road. * After the most recent loss against Clemson - in which Michigan played without Beam, its No. I singles player - it was a frustrated team that returned to Ann Arbor. The young Wolverines, without a senior on the team, are still looking for their niche, so to speak. The season has been a study of contrasts thus far, but consistency is around the corner. "We're still confident," Rolf said.
