Pitino is 102-146 in three seasons with the Celtics. Pitino said since late last season that this season would be his last in Boston if the Celtics didn't make the playoffs. The Celtics have lost 11 of their last 14 games. Earlier this week, Pitino revealed that he put his Boston town- house up for sale, although he said his decision to sell had noth- ing to do with the Celtics. He said his family didn't need as big a house with his son, Richard, leaving for college next year. Pitino, who is known for turning troubled programs around, promised to coach the Celtics back into the playoffs within three seasons. At the time, Pitino anticipated drafting Tim Duncan with the first pick in the draft, but when Boston did not win the lottery, the Celtics settled for Ron Mercer and Chauncey Billups. The Celtics have since traded both players. Pitino coached Kentucky to a national title and three Final Fours before leaving for the NBA and had success coaching at Providence and for the New York Knicks before coaching at Kentucky. ESPN.com and CNNSI.com both reported that Pitino will like- ly return to coaching at the collegiate level. Celtics assistant Jim O'Brien will take over the team as inter- im coach. Overcoming a few nerves in one of their biggest games in years, the Hoyas nearly pitched a shutout against Seton Hall's leading scorer as they beat the 11th-ranked Pirates 78-66 Saturday. "I don't know if anyone's noticed, but we haven't lost a game yet," said coach Craig Esherick, when asked if he now had the team to beat in the Big East.
