Fox analyst Maas has the lowdown on a low score

By Peter Lund
Daily Sports Writer
The Michigan Daily: First of all,
what kind of game should we expect in
this Super Bowl? A typically high-scor-
ing Super Bowl or a low-scoring game
due to the strength of these defenses?
Bill Maas: I'd be real surprised if
there was a high-scoring game from

either one of these offenses. By far and
away, the 41 points the Giants scored last
week were the most they have put up in
the past two or three years. They average
around 20 points a game, and in most of
those there is a defensive or special
teams touchdown. The Giants haven't
been real potent offensively lately. The
same applies to Baltimore. But there are
other ways to score points. I really think

that the game is going to be decided on
special teams and field position because
of the nature of both these teams - good
defenses, ball-control offenses, nothing
fancy. They'll grind 'it out and take care
of the ball and try to create good field
position. Who's going to end up with the
short field? I think that's a big thing.
Kickers and punters will be a big part of
it. The guys you don't think about or talk

about during the week.
TMD: What's the big matchup to
watch in this game?
BM: Everyone wants to talk about the
big matchup of the Giants' offense and
the Ravens' defense. I don't think every-
one's sold on the Ravens' defense.
They've done it all season long, and in
three tough games in the playoffs. People
are still saying, Are they that good?'And
people want to see if they can handle
Lomas Brown and Michael McCrarv.
People want to see if'(the Giants') Lenny
Parker and Ron Stone can match up with
(the Ravens') Tony Siragusa and Sam
Adams. People want to see ifTiki Barber
can get the ball to the perimeter and get
outside and pass Ray Lewis.
TMD: Do you think the Ravens'
defense will cause too many problems
for the Giants?
BM: The Ravens have a solid defense.
There's nothing flashy about it. They just
line up and beat you, and that's the old-
fashioned way. Rarely will you see an
offensive lineman get past their interior
defensive line and into the level of the
linebackers to even block Ray Lewis. He
runs as free as any linebacker I know.
They have the speed on the outside, with
Rob Burnett and McCrary for a good
pass rush. And they don't need to create
a blitz for a pass rush. The Ravens also
have good cornerbacks in Duane Starks
and Chris McAllister - not only are
they fast but they are big. They come up
and they support the run so when the ball
comes outside these guys come up and
make tackles. They close with a purpose.
The safeties are veterans - Corey
Harris has been back there and they also
have Rod Woodson, so they're a tough
group.
TMD: How about the other side of the
ball? Obviously the Ravens' strength is
group.
TMD: How about the other side of the
ball? Obviously the Ravens' strength is
their defense, but will Trent Dilfer and
Jamal Lewis be enough to win? How
does the Giants' defense match up?
BM: The Giants' defense does a lot,
they move all over the place. Can
Baltimore move the ball on them? I think
they can. I think they can pound them
and grind them. It's going to be interest-
ing to see which Giants team shows up.
They've been pretty good at home. They
get excited and they have great fans.
Michael Strahan has played two of the
best games I've seen him play. Jessie
Armstead has played better in the last
two games than he has played all year
long. They're going to have to maintain
that at a neutral site. This team has
played to their defensive strength and
they've always answered the bell.
TMD: Finally, who do you think will
win this game?
BM: (Laughs). You know, everybody
has been making these predictions and I
have made them as well but it's been
such a crazy year that I can't sit there and
just tell you who is going to win Just
through the playoffs, it's been 2razy. And
I don't like to make predictions. But if
you have me pinned down in a corner
and I had to throw out something, I think
the Giants have more weapons offensive-
ly and should create enough opportuni-
ties to put more points on the board. But
I said that about Minnesota and I said it
about Indianapolis and I said it about the
Rams and none of them got real far when
it came time to play.
