Joint programs examined for
environmental studies, science

Knott said the comtmittee wil examine new courses, the
changring role of faculty and core requirements.
The oilfic ial pro posal fixr the development ol'the committees
adds more duties to that list, including examining the role of
'SNRE and LSA graduate student instructors, the function of
field studies and internships in the program, easing~ the transi-
tion for current SNRE students and outlining a timetable for
the program reviewv and approval.
LSA Associate D~ean Robert Owen and SNRE~ Prof. Jim
Diana are co-chairs of'the governance commuittee. The propos-
al assigns this group the tasks of examining the leadership
structure of the program and suggesting renovations to the
'Dana B~uilding and other University facilities that would be
utilized by program participants. It will also create an ong~oing
review process for the key elements of the program and con-
sider involving other relevant University units in the program.
B~oth com-mittees were told to assume that students in the
program would be LSA students with an environmental stud-
ies/sciences concentration.

SNRE faculty vote in December that was "overwhelmingly for
movingforward with negotiations" between SNRE and LSA.
Rabe and Knott both said the commnittees hope to complete
their work this spring and be prepared to undergo the approval
process this fall. If- approved, the earliest the program would
be implemented is fall 2002, Rabe said.
SNRE Prof. Gloria I Iellband, a member of the implernienta-
tion committee, said she considered this to be a "fascinating~
experiment."
"This is a wonderful opportunity to build bridges
between units," Ilelfand said, adding that the current
SNRE environmental programs are considered inacces-
sible to most LSA students. "The program can provide
greater opportunities in environmental education."
Rabe said SNRE students are kept aware of developments
thr-ough e-mails, letters and meetings.

uses MichCon, said if the gas com-
panies increase their rates it is like-
ly rental rates will increase as well.
"If the power bills double. I
guess we're going to be paying a lot
more." Dekraker said.
SNRE sophomore Alex Samul
lives in a house on campus that
uses natural gas.
"We dlon't have storm windows;
we have cracks in the walls. That's
going to be just terrible," Samul
said of' a possible rate increase.
"We pay $300 right nowv."
Kidd said the increase in gas bills
for consumers like Samul will rise
but will be in accordance with the
average national rate.
"Unfortunately, because (prices)
are so far below the market, when-
ever they go back to the market.
