8A --The Michigan Daily - Monday, January 22, 2001 ARTS 2001 Movies: New releases, old ideas By Emily Hebert For the Daily Although 2000 seemed promising, many film critics were less than enthu- siastit about Hollywood's releases last year.:According to box-office num- bers, which were low compared to pre- vious years, movie consumerism was lackluster as well. Whether it was due to a less-than satisfactory crop of movies, soaring ticket prices or the growing popularity of DVDs, the exact reasons are unknown. However, look- ing at what is in store for 2001, it is apparent that in response to low ticket sales Hollywood is recycling previous- ly successful ideas and genres. Many of the films coming out in the next couple of years either borrow from the plots of former blockbusters or are sequels to the original. The following is a list of movies either in production or set for release in 2001: "Hannibal" (release date: Feb. 9) There's been a lot of hype surround- ing this sequel to "Silence of the Lambs." MGM's latest publicity stunt was to send over 500 cooking books out to various media sources, with each book signed "Bon Appetit" by Hanni- bal Lector. Hannibal Lector, of course, is the serial-killing cannibal character made famous by actor Anthony Hop- kins. Although Hopkins will be reprising his role as Lector for the sequel, Jodie Foster chose not to return as FBI agent Clarice Starling. Incidentally, actress Julianne Moore will be playing Star- ling. It has been reported that one of Foster's reasons for not coming back is due to her dislike for the book upon which "Hannibal" is based. The original director, Jonathan Demme, has also bowed out of the pro- ject because he believes the book to be too violent. Instead, Ridley Scott ("Alien," "Gladiator") will be directing. Although the movie ends differently than the book, "H annibal" is said to fol- low the novel quite closely, with the plot involving Clarice Starling protect- ing Lector from a vengeful victim (Gary Oldman). Ray Liotta also stars. "Pearl Harbor" (release date: May 25) Starring Ben Aflieck and Josh Hart- nett, "Pearl Harbor" can best be described as a mix between "Titanic" and "Saving Private Ryan." Affleck and Hartnett each play aviators who fall in love with the same woman. Based upon the fateful bombing that occurred at the Pearl Harbor naval base on December 7, 1941, the movie also covers the events that followed, including the raid on Tokyo. Directed by Michael Bay ("The Rock," ; Armageddon") and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, this movie promises to be full of action, cool spe- cial effects and pyrotechnics. In fact, despite its whopping starting budget of $145 million Ben Aflieck is only get- ting $250,000, a petty paycheck com- pared to the millions he's received for past projects. The film also stars Alec Baldwin, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Tom Size- more ("Saving Private Ryan") and Jon Voight. "American Pie 2" (tentative release date: Summer 2001) Alyson Hannigan ("Buffy the Vam- pire Slayer"), who played the scene- stealing "band camp" girl, is unsure about coming back for this sequel. However, most of the original cast members are expected to return, in addi- tion to actor Bill Paxton ("Twister"), who is reportedly in talks to play Sti- fler's dad. (We were only introduced to Stifler's mom in the first movie.) Also, Adam Hertz is again penning the screenplay, although the plot of "American Pie 2" has yet to be announced. The two latest rumors, though, involve the four boys either going to Europe to find Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) or simply reuniting back home after their first year at college. "Jurassic Park 3" (release date: July 18) With the last "Jurassic Park" install- ment "The Lost World," grossing $229 million domestically, "Jurassic Park 3" was inevitable. Instead of picking up where "The Lost World" left off, though, actor Sam Neill (Dr. Grant) has told the Australia Morning Herald that the movie is actually set in-between the first two films. Although plot details remain to be confirmed, the premise of "Jurassic Park 3" is expected to revolve around a res- cue attempt led by Dr. Grant, when an airplane crashes on the island. Laura Dern (Dr. Ellie Sattler), is returning to do a cameo, but the rest of the cast is new and includes such notables as Tea Leoni ("The Family Man") and William H. Macy ("Magnolia"). Not only are the rumors of a cameo false, but this new version of Pierre Boulle's 1963 novel will look nothing like Heston's 1968 film. Although the premise is the same - a pilot (Mark Wahlberg) lands on a strange new plan- et where human-like apes dominate - this contemporary version will have a decidedly modern-day slant. Directed by Tim Burton ("Sleepy Hollow"), 20th Century Fox has kept many of the details under wraps. How- ever, in regards to how the new film will differ from the old, Fox has let on that the 2001 version will mix the basic plot of the original "with [Burton's] unique personal vision and style, breaking new ground in story, design, makeup and visual effects." Plot-wise, David Warner and Helena Bonham Carter ("Fight Club") play ape father and daughter who sympa- thize with the humans, while Tim Roth ("Gridlock'd") and Michael Clarke Duncan ("The Green Mile") play more conservative members of the ape-ocra- cy who view humans as animals meant to be oppressed. The plot will also involve a romance between Wahlberg and Bonham Carter's characters, although whether or not an ape-human sex scene will occur is still up in the air, due to studio executives' fear of a negative audience reaction. Another notable actor appearing in "Planet of the Apes" will be George Clooney (cameo), with a possible appearance by Danny DeVito, who is currently still in talks. "Terminator 3 " (tentative release date: sunmet; 2002) Both Arnold Schwarzenegger an Edward Furlong (John Connor in "Terminator 2") will return for the third installment in the series. Howev- er, Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor) has rejected the offer to return. According to The Internet Movie Database (imdb.com), she made her decision based on the fact that she did not want to be typecast again, as she was after doing "Terminator 2." In "Terminator 3," John Connor the destined leader for the human ra9 - will lead a rebel force against the Terminator robots who seek to destroy mankind. There's plenty of talk about who will play the evil terminator going up against Ah-nuld. In the last movie, it was the straight-faced, bad- cop T-1000 who could mold into dif- ferent people and objects. "Terminator 3" promises to feature an equally sin- ister Terminator. Only this time, it wie be a female. On the nature of this new Termina- tor, Schwarzenegger made the follow- ing comment to the New York Post: "She can 'disappear, she can mold into someone else, and she is sometimes just an energy." So far, the number one choice for this role is actress Famke Janssen ("X-Men," "Golden- eye"). James Cameron, the director of the first two "Terminator" movies, wiW not be directing "Terminator 3." Instead, John McTiernan ("The Thomas Crown Affair," "Die Hard: With a Vengeance") will direct. Film- ing for T3 will begin this summer. ! m =4 0o f to receive your flu shot University Health Service is still offering flu shots for students, faculty & staff.
