MINNEAPOLIS - Michigan lined
up on its blueline, slapping its sticks on
the ice in celebration of its 4-1 upset
over No. 2 Minnesota.
The Wolverines were watching
senior forward Josh Langfeld accept
the Mariucci-Renfrew Trophy --- the
award given to the winner of the annu-
al Michigan-
Minnesota HOCKEY
matchup in the
College Hockey Notebook
Showcase.
It was fitting that the Coon Rapids,
Minn., native posed with the trophy in
his hands. As the lone Wolverine from
the state of Minnesota, Langfeld was
making his third homecoming trip. The
win was especially sweet because it
came against a team that had just one
out-of-state player on its roster.
"It's great," Langfeld said. "I know a
lot of the guys over there. It's a great
feeling to come back home and win in
front of your fans in my hometown. To
get these guys to jump up and play for
me, it's a great feeling"
Although Langfeld didn't score in
the game, he made his presence

known, creating numerous scoring
chances and causing havoc in the
Minnesota zone.
"I thought he had a strong game and
could have had a couple of goals in the
game, but the puck isn't going in for
him right now," Michigan coach Red
Berenson said. "He gave it everything
he had tonight:'
After starting the season on a tear,
the senior winger - best remembered
for his overtime goal against Boston
College in the 1998 national champi-
onship game - has struggled to find
the net of late, but still ranks third on
the team with 15 points.
MORE OR LESS: Michigan usually
outshoots its opponents, so it was sur-
prising when Minnesota posted a 34-
26 advantage in shots on Saturday
night.
This marked the first time the
Wolverines were outshot since last sea-
son's finale. On March 26, Maine
notched 1 7 more shots than the
Wolverines (45-28) en route to elimi-
nating Michigan from the NCAA tour-
nament, 5-2.
The Wolverines' 4-1 victorv over
Minnesota also was the first time
Michigan was outshot and ended up
winning the game since March 1l. On

that date, Western Michigan tallied one
more shot than the Wolverines (27-26)
yet lost the battle on the scoreboard, 6-2.
PoWER-LESS: The highly touted
Minnesota powerplay that boasted a
33.8 percent success rate coming into
Saturday night's contest was no match
for the Michigan penalty killers.
Coming off of what captain Geoff
Koch called "their best PK game of the
season" against Wisconsin, the
Wolverines shut down Minnesota,
forcing the Golden Gophers to go emp-
tyhanded in four opportunities with the
extra attacker.
EXTRA CHEESE: At the end of each
of the first two periods in Saturday
night's game at Minnesota, the public
address announcer in Mariucci Arena
added a bit of humor, much to the cha-
grin of the Minnesota faithful.
At the end of the first period he said,
"Last minute of play in the period, and
there are 30 shopping days left until
Christmas."
After receiving laughter from the
sellout crowd, the announcer outdid
himself in the waning moments of the
second period, proclaiming "Last
minute of play in the period, and there
will be no recount"- receiving an ova-"
tion from the politically savvy crowd.

Geoff Koch said.
Never mind that Michigan didn't
dominate both games.
Like great Michigan teams of the
past, the current, crop of Wolverines
utilized solid defensive play and out-
standing goaltending, and took advan-
tage of their offensive chances to find
a way to win.
And they did it with the class that
comes with wearing the maize and
blue sweaters.
They didn't budge when Wisconsin
took several cheap shots, both physi-
cally and verbally, after the whistle on
Thursday night.
Instead, they let their game speak
for itself, making the Badgers pay for
their chippiness with two power play
goals.
Afterwards, the Wolverines

expressed their focus to finish the
weekend strong on Saturday.
"The coaches challenged us -
because of the last two weeks we do
have something to prove," defense-
man Jeff Jillson said. "We came in
here on a mission - one down and
one to go."
The Wolverines completed their
quest by shocking the Golden
Gophers, 4-1. They silenced the not
riously raucous Mariucci Arena crow
to the point where one could hear a pin
drop.
Just as Cammalleri said, the under-
dog label incited a fire in each
Wolverine, especially himself.
Cammalleri had a hand in six of the
seven Michigan goals in the two
games.
Afterwards, when asked if
Michigan's Showcase sweep woul
be noticed around the nation,
Cammalleri said with a smile --
hope so, I hope so."

Showcase showdown
Since the establishment of the
College Hockey Showcase in
1993, Michigan has emerged as
the clear favorite every
Thanksgiving weekend.
The Wolverines' 9-4-1 record is
the best of the four squads, and
they've "won" the Showcase four
of seven years. WCHA rival
Minnesota has won it twice.
Here's a look at Michigan's'

M aggressive enough
to come away with pair

MINNEAPOLIS - Late in the
third period of Saturday's College
Hockey Showcase contest against
No. 2 Minnesota, Michigan goalie
Josh Blackburn. experienced a play
that pretty much typified his
Thanksgiving weekend.
The Golden Gophers were trailing
3-1. and Blackburn had been virtual-
ly flawless. After giving up a goal
early in the first period on a bad-
angle shot to Minnesota captain Erik
Westrum, Blackburn settled down,
turning aside numerous excellent
scoring chances by the Gophers.
To all in attendance at Mariucci
Arena, it was clear that Blackburn
was on top of his game. But, in case
some fans still weren't sure who was
in charge, one play in the third peri-
od told the whole story.
With the Golden Gophers on a
powerplay, Westrum fired a shot
from the point. The puck was
deflected twice, first off of a
Minnesota player's stick and then off
of Michigan defenseman Andy
Burnes. Out of position, Blackburn
could only watch as the puck -

which appeared to be ticketed for
the net -- instead clanged off' of the
left goalpost and stayed out.
As Minnesota fans roared in dis-
gust. Blackburn quickly regained his
position in net. Calm and collected,
he knew that he'd gotten the one
break he needed to finish off the
Gophers.
"I like the fact that Blackburn did-
n't get rattled when he gave up that
bad goal," Michigan coach Red
Berenson said, in reference to
Westrum's score. "In the second
period, the first 10 or 12 minutes it
was all Minnesota. He had to keep
us in the game, and he did."
The first few weeks of this season
hadn't been especially smooth for
Blackburn. After giving up five
goals to North Dakota in the Ice
Breaker, the junior netminder was
torched for five goals on just II
shots in a loss at Ferris State on Nov.
11.
To make matters worse,
Blackburn could only watch last
Saturdav as Alaska-Fairbanks scored
two empty-net goals en route to
stunning the Wolverines, 5-2, at Yost
Ice Arena.
So, by stopping 64 of 67 shots in

Michigan's College Hockey
Showcase victories over Wisconsin
and Minnesota. Blackburn did more
than win a pair of games - he
showed that he may have regained
the form that made him one of the
CCHA's premier goaltenders a sea-
son ago.
"He played two awesome games,"
defenseman Andy Burnes said.
"Sometimes we do make some mis-
takes. but it's great to know that
you've got somebody like Blackie
back there to back you up and hold
up the team."
Blackburn is not the most outspo-
ken person, neither in victory nor in
defeat.
As a result, even after posting his
second big road win of the weekend
in front of a hostile crowd, he was
characteristically humble and under-
stated.
"It just kind of hit my blocker, hit
my armpit, and trickled across,"
Blackburn said about Westrum's
goal. "It was alright. I was just kind
of like, 'Well, forget it.'
"But things turned around. I was
seeing the puck better after that and
making the right decisions. Things
worked out."

jointed in passing and set-up.
Then, with 32 seconds left in the
man-advantage, Cammalleri took a pass
at the top of the left faceoff circle from
John Shounevia, one-timed the puck
and eluded Minnesota goaltender Adam
Hauser top-shelf, stick-side for the tving
goal. The puck hit a skate on the way to
the net and the goal lit a fire underneath
the Wolvennes as momentum began to
shift.
Four minutes and one second later,
Cammalleri struck again. After captain
Geoff Koch had poke-checked the puck
away from Minnesota defenseman
Jordan Leopold behind Leopold's own
goal, Cammalleri scooped up the loose
puck, swept around Hauser's right side,
and slid it through the five-hole for the
2-1 advantage.
"Koch made a really good
forecheck," Cammalleri said. "I came
behind the net, he was causing havoc.
The puck laid loose . . . I had time to
walk out in front - the goalie opened
up his five-hole a little bit and I tried to
flip it through."
The goal quieted the 9,767 fans at
Mariucci, but Minnesota was lax to

respond. With 4:48 left in the period
Jed Ortmeyer in the penalty box for
hooking, Hilbert took a pass from
Cammalleri, split defensemen Leopold!
and Dylan Mills and flipped the puck
underneath I lauser's glove for a crush-
ing, shorthanded goal and a 3-1
Michigan lead.
"I think it was (a back-breaker),
Hilbert said. "Once I scored it put a lot
of pressure on them to take chances and
that's not the kind of team they are."
On Thursday. the Wolverincz
goals from Cammalleri, Mark Mink and
Mark Kosick and held offa third-period
rush by the Badgers to escape the Kohl
Center with the victory.
At the 15:03 mark of the third,
Wisconsin's Rene Bourque scored on a
defensive breakdown. With 1:17 left,
the Badgers' David Hukalo scored a
powerplay goal, trimming Michigan's
lead to 3-2. Then, with 12 secoi
remaining, Brad Winchester shot t e
puck over the top of the Michigan goal
from the bottom of the left faceoff circle
as Blackburn flailed to get across the
crease.
"The last five minutes, the whole
game changed - we were back on our
heels and we played desperate hockey
just to keep the puck out of the net,"
Berenson said.

as the CCHA's only unbeaten team in
conference play with a pair of victo-
ries over a struggling Ferris State
team, 3-1 on Friday and 7-4 on
Saturday.
