14 The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, November 18, 2000 ' JAG UARS Notre Dame thorn In Blue's side four years running Continued from Page 11 By Jeff Phillips -Daily Sports Writer SOUTH BEND - The Michigan women's soccer team's season came to ~ar emotional end on Saturday with a -Iloss to Notre Dame (21-0-1). Perhaps hit hardest by the loss were E eniors Kacy Beitel, Canissa Stewart, Marie Spaccarotella and Stephanie McArdle. Down 3-I with three minutes left in lthe game, they didn't want to let go. jBeitel sent a pass to Spaccarotella down tlke sideline, setting up the Wolverines { -final scoring chance - an Ahby C Crumpton shot that sailed high. 'As the final seconds clicked down, the seniors were still tackling and chal- lenging for the ball, never giving up. The seniors left the field red-eyed, as most of the team did. The class leaves behind a strong lega- Qy of four consecutive NCAA tourna- ment appearances and numerous -Michigan records. But the seniors also leave behind a record that they aren't too proud of - a winless record against Notre Dame. "We've played Notre Dame six times -- it would've been nice to win one of them in four years, " Stewart said. Sunday's game was Michigan closest contest with Notre Dame over the span. Michigan played well, but unfortu- nately for the Wolverines, this may be the best Notre Dame team ever - which speaks volumes for a perennial Final Four team. Perhaps the most telling fact from Notre Dame's season is they defeated No. 2 Washington 5-0 on October 24. "This is a different team playing Notre Dame today than four years ago or even last year," Beitel, a team cap- tain, said. "We played with confi- dence." The Fighting Irish haven't lost a match all year and 14 of Notre Dame's 21 wins have been shut-outs. Notre Dame has allowed just six goals all sea- son - two of which were scored by. Besides Beitel's goal Sunday, Spaccarotella beat the Notre Dame goalkeeper in the previous matchup. The road to the championship is [he real concerns for Mvichigan were on defense, though. In particu- lar, the range of Jones was a constant nuisance for a Wolverine team still tooling with their defensive strategy. She ended an extraordinary 7- 11 from behind the arc, finishing with a game-high 25 points. "Our perimeter defense was not as strong as we had hoped," Ingram said. "That's something we need to work on:' Guevara cited the loss of last year's seniors as the immediate cause of the defensive collapse. "You don't want to just keep outscor- ing people" Guevara said. "You've got to get a defensive stop." Inside, the Wolverines had the most success when both the 6-3 Bies and 6-3 Jennifer Smith were on the floor. Their inside presence allowed the Michigan guards some freedom marking at the top of the key and around the perimeter. Smith was at times a liability under- neath, allowing Houston center Tatum Brown room to maneuver. Brown fin- ished with 10 points. Michigan plays at 7 p.m. Friday, also at Crisler Arena.
