6B - The Michigan Daily - SportsMonday -- November 13, 2000 'M', Ferris fights commonplace By Jon Schwartz Dal, Sports Writer BIG RAPIDS - "Every game is dif- fercbt - that's why we play all of these games. Such were Michigan coach Red Berenson's thoughts following his team's 5-4 loss at Ferris State on Saturday night. In some respects, Berenson was right - the result was certainly different, with Michigan winning at Yost Ice Arena on Friday night 4-1. But in other ways, the players from each team tried to prove the Wolverines' leg- endary coach incorrect: Boys will be boys, and whenever Michigan faces off with the Bulldogs, there's trouble brewing. "The clock runs out, the bad blood on the ice ----a couple of guys got into it- but all of a sudden their team's on the ice, so we jump," Michigan associate head coach Mel Pearson said after witnessing Saturday night's game-ending melee. Like a lot of people in the building, he was struggling to make sense of exactly what had happened on the Ewigleben Ice Arei: surface as the final buzzer sound- ed. But a look back in the teams' history proves that nothing should seem too out of the ordinary. On Feb. 5 last season, the two teams faced-off at Yost and combined for 54 penalty minutes. The year before, they engaged in a bral after Andrew Merrick collided with Bulldogs' goalie Vince Owen, lead- ing the entire Ferris State team to mob Merrick and precipitating the two teams to go after each other. This past weekend, the two teams took it up a notch, with a big fight in each game leaving only one question to be asked. What's left for next year? "It happens everytime we get together likd that," Ferris State senior left wintt Rob Liohtfoot said. "We just don't like each other, I guess. Perhaps that's an understatement. On Friday night, Michigan's Mike Cammalleri got cross-checked into the Ferris State crease 1:01 into the third period. He knocked over Owen and the fight was on. Michigan's Dave Huntizicker and Jed Ortmeyer and Ferris State's Chad McIver and captain Jim Dube were all given game disqualifications, making them ineligible for Saturday night's game. A combined nine penalties were handed out. Saturday night's brawl put Friday's small quarrel to shame. Michigan's Jeff Jillson laid a hit on Chad Kunitz near the buzzer and Kunitz responded with a slash to Jillson after the horn. Owen cleans up after the brawl i A ,$ 30 :N . ference season - small fights broke out, later escalating to a full-scale war encom- passing the entire surface. Where the ice was clear of players dur- ing the fight, it was stacked with random pieces of equipment, everything from sticks to mouthpieces. Three players from each side were given game disqualifications, including Michigan's Mike Komisarek, David Wyzgowski and Kevin O'Malley. The Bulldogs' Owen, the same goalie that got involved in the fight with Merrick two years ago, was also kicked out. "It obviously was an intense game, O'Malley said. "Jillson had two guys on him, and obviously he can probably han- dle two guys but I was just going to push one of them off of him." What ended up happening was a tussle between O'Mallev and Owen in fact, There are those who shy away from challenges. And then there are those who travel 9,000 miles looking for them. -9bo00 4s5. two tussles with a short pause in between. "We fought twice and the first time was good," O'Malley said. That time, the two goalies both had their upper-body padding on, which O'Malley equated to "throwing punches in a straight-jacket." Because of the added weight, the two could do little harm to one-another. Then came a slight pause and sudden- ly, the two were going at it again. "The second time we went, he was smarter than me, I guess, so he took his equipment off and I still had everything on and he's got nothing on, just his shirt," O'Malley said. Owen easily knocked the weighted- down O'Malley to the ice and stood over him, triumphant. Weekend totals: 66 penalties for 266 minutes. For fighting, 24 penalties for 180 minutes. Ten game disqualifications. Weekend lesson: Every game might be different, but when Michigan meets the Bulldogs, the same emotion surfaces.
