2B - The Michigan Daily - SportsMonday - October 30, 2000 CLUBSPORTSWEEKLY Edited by Jeff Phillips Women's hockey sweeps pair from Lakers I ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Playing for pride, respect and a handful of fans, the Michigan women's hockey club extended its unbeaten streak this weekend, winning a pair of games against Lake Superior State, 4- I on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday. The newest members of the team dominated scoring in Saturday's victo- ry, which the Lakers forfeited once thev fell behind 5-2. The team's lone freshman, Jackie Neal and Julia Reed, made their mark, combining to score three of Michigan's five goals. Michigan's goalie tandem, consist- ing of senior Dana Aronson and junior Christine Granger, has allowed a mere two goals in the team's first four games of the season, including back- to-back shutout victories against Buffalo. While it considers every game important, the team has one ultimate goal in mind: repeating last year's CCWHA league championship. "It's our number one goal," forward Jodi Berris said. "We really want to win again." Team captain Tory Deleeuw believes that Michigan has a decent chance of retaining its conference title. "We have a strong team this year," she said. In its next game, the women's hock- ey club battles Bowling Green on Friday at 10 p.m. All home games are played at Yost Arena, and admission is free of charge. Newspaper sues Indiana to release Knight records BLOOMINGTON (AP) - A newspaper is suing Indiana University to force the school to release its records related to the firing of coach Bob Knight. In its lawsuit filed Thursday in Marion Superior Court, The Indianapolis Star says the publicly funded university deserves to fully inform taxpayers about the events leading to the dismissal of the basket- ball coach. "The Bob Knight investigation was conducted by officers of a public institution, supported by taxpayer dollars and is a matter of huge public interest," Star editor Tim Franklin said. Ex-girlfriend: Carruth wit- nessed shooting of Adams CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A woman who once dated former Carolina Panthers player Rae Carruth says he told her he witnessed the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend and was mad at her for not getting an abor- tion, according to media reports. According to The Charlotte Observer and CNN/Sports Illustrated, Candace Smith told police Carruth admitted he was upset with Cherica Adams and was at the scene of the November 1999 shooting. "He just said he didn't like her, and he just wished she would die," Smith reportedly told police, according to the Observer. The newspaper reported that it had obtained a copy of the 32-page tran- script of Smith's June interview with police. CNN/SI did not divulge the source on which it based its report. Carruth and three other men have been charged with plotting Adams' murder. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Carruth, whose murder trial enters its second week of jury selection Monday. Smith is expected to testify at Carruth's trial. Carruth has maintained his inno- cence. According to the reports, Smith joined Carruth at Carolinas Medical Center just after the drive-by shooting as doctors struggled to keep Adams and her baby alive. Subway Series receives low- est TV ratings in history NEW YORK (AP) - This Subway Series drew only token viewership. Fox Sports' telecasts of the New York Yankees' five-game victory over the Mets produced the lowest- rated World Series in history, draw- ing big audiences in the Big Apple but in few other major TV markets. The games averaged a 12.4 national rating and a 21 share. down 22.5 percent from last year. WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) -- All Drew Brees wanted was a second chance. "I stepped into the huddle and told the guys this is the way it is supposed to be. We will be successful," said Brees, who teamed with a trio of receivers and car- ried Purdue one step closer to the Rose Bowl. Brecs tied his career worst by throw- ing four interceptions, but he passed for 455 yards and three fourth-quarter touchdowns as the No. 16 Boilermakers earned a 31-27 victory over No. 12 Ohio State on Saturday. With two more victories, Purdue would be assured of its first trip to the Rose Bowl in 34 years. The Boilermakers (5-1 Big Ten, 7-2 overall) trailed 27-24 with just over two minutes to go after Brees' fourth inter- ception set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Jerry Westbrooks. But on the second play after the kick- off, Brees passed 64 yards to Seth Morales, who got behind the Ohio State defense and went in for the winning touchdown with 1:55 to go. The Buckeyes (3-2, 6-2), who had not lost to Purdue since 1988, fumbled a bad snap on their next possession, and Purdue ran out the clock as fans poured onto the field to celebrate.
