Furbies and Tickle Me Elmo - move over for the
next big thing. On a foggy Wednesday night, major
retailers in Ann Arbor received the "must-get" item for
the holidays: Sony's Playstation 2. Garners from Ann
VArbor and beyond flocked to electronics stores such as
-3est Buy to line up with the hopes of getting what is
now being called "The Deuce."
With limited numbers of systems available, teenagers
ind adults alike camped out at several major retailers
3rith dreams of owning Sony's 128-bit monster, which
allows players to not only enjoy games like Tekken Tag
-','Tournament and the armada of now famous EA Sports'
games, but also watch DVD movies.
The insanity of the surrounding Playstation 2's
release could be best seen at Meijer and Best Buy. At
Meijer, only eighteen systems were available by raffle
*to the hundreds gathered at the store.


Bergman honored by dancers

Elizabeth Bergmann will be on hand to celebrate a perfor-
mance in her honor. Bergmann, who was chair of the Univer-
sity's Dance Department from the early 1970's through the
mid-1980's, will receive a distinguished alumni award from
the School of Music Alumni Association.
Under Bergmann, the Dance Department went from being
a part of the physical education program to being more like
Juilliard's conservatory based program. This shift allowed for
dance students to become more immersed in their art. Many
of Bergmann's past students will be coming together to honor
her in this performance.
The performance will showcase works that show the
growth in modern dance.
Beth Corning will be performing Isadora Duncan's solo
"Rose Petals" from 1911. Corning is the artistic director and
choreographer of the Corning Dances & Company. Two cur-

rent UM Dance MFA candidates will be dancing in the per-
formance as well. Jodi Leigh Allen will perform a solo that
Bergmann choreographed in 1997.
Bergmann's former students did not only stick to dance
after their studies. Pamela Lydon Heard has trained at the
schools of Merce Cunningham, Alvin Ailey. Martha Graham
and at American Ballet Theater.
Lydon Heard's postmodern work is what has made her
famous. Many of Bergmann's former students have gone on
to successful careers, from dancing with Martha Graham to
creating companies of their own.
Dance Department chair Gay Delanghe said, "Liz is inter-
ested in dance as a spirit enriching form. (She) likes the
magic of the art and conveys that to students." Of the pres-
ence of the Duncan solo Delanghe said, "history is always
with us, it's nice to reach back and see where it came from
and make connections."
-The perfomance is tonight in the Betty Pease studio
theater at 8p. m Admission isfee.

"If I get one, this will be the greatest moment of my
life," one teenager said when asked about getting the
system.
At Best Buy, where approximately 100 systems went
on sale at 10 AM, more people went home disappointed
than happy. For gainers who were denied, future
prospects do not look good. Most retailers either do not
know when they will receive more systems, or have a
waiting list well into the first quarter of next year.
