television. That's the

went on my dorm room wall was a Yankees
Murderers Row pennant. The poster putty was
cheap, but it didn't stop my roommate from
reattaching it every week - even after it fell on
him in the middle of the night ("Ahh!").
Yes, back in my day Lloyd residents were
Yankees or Mets fans to the death.
So I was surprised to see only a few sweat--
pirs-wearing stragglers in the lounge, gazing at
the third presidential debate - especially on a'
niigltrlike this.
'got in the familiar elevator. Had Lloyd
slan~d really changed that much?
'Af the last second, two top-floor residents
stopped the doors from closing and stepped in
with me.
It hadn't changed at all.
"I can't believe they won't turn on the game,'
said Whitney Mancino, a Manhattan native.
John Morgan - a Long [slander -was
eqlly annoyed. "We'll just watch it in some-
body's room;' he said.
That room, it figured, was right across from
my friend's - so I happened in fr an inning or*
two.
Whitney, the Yanks fan (t-shirt and all), had
th um deal. Her parents were sitting on the
third-base line, and she was sitting on a semi-
carpeted floor listening to Bob Costas.

A two-loss Big Ten champion - it
could happen.
Thanks to diminishing scholarships
per team and wider coverage of all
teams, parity is the word of the Big Ten
and many other schools across theToun-
try. The national championship winner is
likely to have a loss, and, with a tough
schedule remaining for the four 3-1
teams in the conference, the Big Ten
winner could have two.
"It proves without a doubt the compet-
itiveness of the conference' Michigan
coach Lloyd Carr said. "It's the era of
Big Ten football we're in."
The last time a Big Ten champion had
a two-loss team was in 1990 when Iowa,
Michigan, Michigan State and Illinois
tied at 6-2 for the crown.
Iowa went to the Rose Bowl and lost
to Washington, while Michigan beat
Mississippi in the Gator Bowl 35-3.
This year, Purdue is still in the driver's
seat, even though it is tied with
Michigan, Northwestern and Minnesota
at 3-I.
No other team can go bowling in
Pasadena unless the Boilermakers lose a
game. Purdue plays at Minnesota on
Saturday and home against Ohio State
on Oct. 28. Since the Boilermakers have
already beaten Northwestern and
Michigan, they would win a tiebreaker
with those two teams.
The Big Ten tiebreaker system isn't all
too complicated. The first tiebreaker is
head-to-head competition, then overall
winning percentage. If the teams are still
tied, then the team that went to the Rose
Bowl most recently is eliminated.
SHHH! Yesterday's Big Ten
Teleconference aroused little excitement
with Carr and Michigan State Bobby
Williams.
The lowlights - both coaches contin-
ually called the game "a great rivalry'
and said little else.
Carr and Williams were so short and
cliched with their comments that ques-
tions from the media ran dry. Usually
reporters have 10 minutes to ask ques-
tions. Both coaches got to leave early
yesterday
Williams also had no news on T.J.
Duckett's health. The star running back is
still bothered by a hip injury, much like
Michigan freshman running back Chris
Perry. Both plan to play this weekend.
