Regardless of the way Altman por- trays women, the film is terrible. The plot is suspect, the dialogue is pretty poor and the ending makes no sense. Overall three pretty negative features for the film. I believe that the movie is simply a vehicle for Altman to capture a live birth on camera. In his timid. quakinig voice, Bazan responded to a question about his mar- riage, first with a casual avoidance and then with the k. ga g truth: "There's lot z, more conflicts . '""""than I could have Pedro the imagined. Lion BItt it's really Blind Pi good" This is the Oct. 16. 2000 type of honsty that fans have coce to expect from Pedro the Lion. The band's strategy is simple 1 and honest and so far it is like most things simple and honest, hidden and cherished.. Since the band's first release, 1996's "Whole," the band has emerged out of the thick, weeping willow fields of indie-rock to become on of the most critically acclaimed bands of the genre. In 1998, their first full-length album "It's Hard to Find a Friend" earned them a spot in Spin's "Top Ten Albums You Didn't Hear." The band's most recent albun, "Winners Never Quit," recorded by Bazan in his basement allowed him to take the time to produce what he had in mind rather than letting it develop out of what happened in th studio. On stage, Pedro the Lion came ol the same as they do o their albums With little more banter than "thanl you," what the audience saw was thre guys playing mostly soft, melodi songs about failure and broken relation ships. It was only Bazan's appear that really contributed to the live per formance. Contorting his face for th high notes and singing with eyes shut i was possible to feel the tired calm, tha the songs conveyed as the crow< showed by nodding their heads slowl: along to a mix from the band's cata logue. The band ran through such highlight as the painfully sad "Winners Neve Quit" in which Bazan sings, "Count blessing / that you're such a fail you're second chance / might neve have come." The band did break thi routine of slow simplicity for "A Mini of her Own" in which Bazan tells the narrative of a man murdering his wife which includes the eerie repeated lyrics "You put down that telephone / you're not calling anyone" as the crashing music becomes disjunct. The song offered a perfect example of the ba" powerful narrative capabilities. c much so that at the end of the song i was hard to look Bazan in the eye anm see him as the same man who moment before talked about how great marriage is. A Pedro show is not something tha you get excited for and come out o feeling exhilarated. If you do, you hav mnissed the point. Courtesy o Paramount Hello, Ladies Man?
