"Winning is about finishing," Carr said in his opening statement. "What I @w in the second half (on Saturday), I don't like. And what I saw is a direct reflection of the way I coached. "I don't like that either." Carr was short with his comments and even shorter with his answers. But the coach did have some strong words and strong emo- tions about FOOTBALL Michigan's 32-31 loss to Purdue. Notebook The coach took e blame upon himself for the ugly see- ond-half turnaround - an intense, skilled first half turned into a laid-back, conservative second half. "I don't like the way we played - I don't like the way I coached," Carr said. "I don't like anything about it." Play-calling by offensive coordinator Stan Parrish seemed to slim from a diverse playbook to a 3x5 index card in ie jast 30 minutes. The Wolverines passed half as much and to fewer people. Michigan tried to run the ball to no avail. Go down the final stats and the Wolverines' numbers change more rapidly than teams jumping ship out of the top 25. Anthony Thomas in the first half: 13 carries, 115 yards - second half: Eight carries and only 15 yards. The Michigan receivers and tight ends had 15 catches for 139 yards in the first half. In the second, they had four catches for 29 yards. "We've probably never played better than we did in the first half," Carr said. "Too bad they only played for two quar- ters." The times down on the Michigan practice field outside Schembechler Hall this week sure won't be like a Slip'n Slide on a summer day. "It's not going to be a fun week," Carr said. "We've got a lot of work to do, and a short time to make a lot of corrections and improvement." As for what this team must do now, senior cornerback James Whitley was mostly at a loss for words. Meanwhile, wide receiver Marquise Walker flat out described a lack of effort on the part of the Wolverines. "I think we got a lazy on offense and defense in the second half," Walker said. "They came out in the second half and we didn't. We have to now forget about it; that game is over. We should have put more points on the board and our defense could have stepped up a little more. The whole team was to blame." While the mistakes were all-around, the 22 points Purdue put up on the board were the fault of a defensive scheme that put zero pressure on Drew Brees and allowed easy catches for a total of 321 yards of offense. Michigan also gave up 179 yards on the ground in the second half, most on missed tackles and missed assignments. x , FILE PHOTO Coach Lloyd Carr said yesterday "I've never had a good loss. If I am ever involved in a good loss then its time for me to quit." Need a little chuckle? Look to East Lansing "We need to see some intensity (on defense)," Carr said. "We need to see some tackling. We need to be able to stop the run." Walker said that the "team needs to come together," even if it's midway through the season. "We can still do it," Walker said. FRYSINGER OUT FOR SEASON: Senior defensive lineman Jake Frysinger, who reinjured his right foot early in the Bowling Green game, will not return this fall. "That injury is not healing to the extent that will enable him to come back," Carr said. Frysinger will not have to petition for a fifth-year of eligibility. Under NCAA rules, petitioning is required only for the sixth year. "This is a tremendous disappoint- ment for Jake, and yet the good news is he does have another year of eligibility that he can use," Carr said. "It's a disap- pointment for all of us." The bone in Frysinger's foot is not broken and won't facilitate surgery unless it fails to heal down the road. Quarterback Drew Henson has a sim- ilar injury, which Carr hopes won't rein- jure like Frysinger's. INJURY UPDATE: Carr said "We'll see" regarding whether or not David Terrell, Eric Wilson and freshman running back Chris Perry will play this weekend. Prior to Carr, Walker said that Terrell described the injury to him as just a bruise and that he was 100 percent for Indiana. Terrell hobbled on the field for much of the second half. CLOSE CALLS: For the fourth-straight game, Michigan's fate came down to the final few plays. Normally a standout in tight contests, Carr has found his team drop two out of the last four. Last season Michigan was 6-1 when the game was decided by five or less points. FIRE ALARM: The fire alarm contin- ued to go off during the early morning hours at the hotel where Michigan slept on Friday night. As to whether the annoyance had any effect, Walker said the fire alarm was not the cause of their second-half per- formance on the field. My mother has always told me not to delight in other peo- ple's misfortunes. Well, sorry Mom. Right now that's the only thing that can make me feel better. The Michigan football team has squandered a chance to make this season anything other than just another year. Midterms have arrived. The weather is getting much more brisk. All in all, there's very little to be excited about right now in Ann Arbor. So I'll look north. Whenever I start to get down about the state of affairs on this campus, I look at Michigan State and their football fortunes. Usually a quick glance at the standings, along with a bowl of hot Ramen, makes me feel much bet- ter. Lo and behold, the ol' standby has worked again. In an effort to pull me out of my doldrums, Michigan State, after a 3-0 start, is now 3-2 (0-2 in the conference). The Spartans are looking up at every team except Wisconsin, which is 0-3. Even better, there's a remote chance that Michigan State will fin- ish Big Ten play 0-8. Aside from 1994, when the Spartans forfeited all I I of their games, they have never finished the Big Ten season without a win or a tie. Michigan State's slide began last week. An easy win at Iowa slipped away last weekend, dropping the Spartans to 0-2. Wisconsin visits Spartan Stadium this weekend. It's inconceivable that the Badgers will slip to 0-4. Their run defense should do a decent job on T.J. Duckett and that's about all Michigan State has to offer this sea- son. A week from this Saturday, the Spartans come to Michigan for the annual rivalry game. Michigan State hasn't beaten the Wolverines in con- secutive seasons since 1966 and '67. And without a passing game to exploit Michigan's weak defensive backs, they won't break that streak. Illinois represents Michigan State's best chance to get a victory when the Illini travel to East Lansing on Oct. 28. Still, Illinois can't be dismissed solely on account of its poor perfor- mance at Minnesota on Sept. 30. That's still a team with talent, and will provide the Spartans a chal- lenge. r Michigan State goes to Columbus to play Ohio State next. Combine what will be at stake for the Buckeyes at that point in the season with their memories of what hap- pened in Ohio Stadium two years ago, and Michigan State will need quite a few breaks to go their way. The Spartans' most frustrating opponent, Purdue, then comes to town. Michigan State has had a horri- ble time with the Boilermakers since Joe Tiller arrived. The Spartans blew a 21-10 lead with just two minutes left in 1997, losing 22-21. They were See DUPREY, Page 12 Colgate netminder never alone on the ice By Joe Smith Daily Sports Writer Junior Colgate netminder Jason efevre lightly taps the crossbar four es, kneels down and starts to pray just before the shootout begins. One might think that the goalie is just begging that the pipes that surround him will help deter the barrage of penalty shots that the Wolverines will fire. But to Lefevre, this display is nothing out of the ordinary - and its meaning transcends any game he plays or any save he makes. His father died suddenly of an neurism this past spring, on the day ffore his final exams started. The man who had introduced him to the game he loves at the age of two - and coached him on and off the ice through- out his entire childhood - was gone. Colgate coach Don Vaughan was impressed with how Lefevre handled the situation and "the way he responded - the summer that he had having to deal with that." This fall, Lefevre had to deal with other tragedy close to him, as his best friend's father died suddenly. "So he's had to go back over all the emotions again," Vaughan said. "But he's trying to manage, even though it's some- thing he definitely won't get over." Instead of getting down and letting the tragedy consume his life, Lefevre decid- ed to make a statement, dedicating this season in his father's memory. So every time he takes the ice, he takes Ae time in between periods to reflect and ommunicate with his dad, whom he feels is always there with him. "I just talk to him," Lefevre said. "I tell him how things are going and see if he's going to be there for me. Sometimes he wants me to let a few goals in just so that I don't get too confident. It's a comforting thing to know that he's there with me." In his first game since his father's death this past Friday against Michigan, Lefevre was one of the only reasons Colgate sent the game to overtime. The Red Raiders' netminder was constantly under attack, as Michigan pelted 32 shots at him, includ- ing eight in the extra session. His quick glove save on Michigan winger Scott Matzka's slapshot with just a minute remaining in overtime kept Colgate going and forced a five-man shootout to decide who would play in the championship game. Lefevre was "unbelievable," Vaughan said. "He's been waiting patiently for this chance and he answered the bell."
