the first time in 35 years that both teams have
entered this early-season battle undefeated.
Leading the Iowa State offense will be
reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week
Ennis Haywood. Haywood, the nation's
fourth-leading rusher with 153.8 yards per
contest, will be a major test for the suspect
Nebraska defense that gave up 492 yards to
Missouri last week.
On defense, the Cyclones will have to
deal with multi-talented Nebraska quarter-
back Eric Crouch, who has amassed 15
touchdowns in his growing Heisman cam-
paign.
Look for the Cyclones to finish the season
with a winning record and a bowl berth.
Don't look for this to be one of the wins.

No. 12 OKLAHOMA (1-0, 4-0) vs. No. 10

TEXAS (1-0, 3-1): With two highly-ranked
teams playing at a neutral site -- the Cotton
Bowl -- in a game with a sponsor
(Southwestern Bell), this game has the feel-
ing of a bowl. The only difference is that this
annual Red River War is a little bit more per-
sonal. Recruiting, bragging rights and con-
ference championship implications are all at
stake.
Both teams are in the top 15 for the first
time since 1984.
For Oklahoma, senior Josh Heupel needs
just 12 completions to become the school's
all-time career completions leader.
Oklahoma is anxious to show that Heupel
is a Heisman candidate and that the Sooners
are among the nation's best. They'll prove a
lot Saturday.

For the first time this season, the Michigan volleyball
team is absent from the national rankings. This weekend, i
has the chance to reclaim its place in the top 25.
Indiana (1-3 Big Ten, 10-4 overall) visits Cliff Keen
Arena tonight in Michigan's Big Ten home opener, promot-
ed as the annual night to "Rock the House." Before the
Wolverines have a chance to recover, defending national
champion Penn State ( 1-3, 12-4) will be waiting on
Saturday night.
Michigan (1-3, 10-4), Indiana and Penn State each quali-
fied for the 1999 NCAA Tournament and are now embroiled
in a three-way tic in the conference standings, making this
weekend especially crucial in the vicious Big Ten.
The Hoosiers will give the Wolverines their first home
test of the year. If the ad campaigns work, Cliff Keen Arena
should be rocking, and Michigan hopes to feed off of that
energy and excitement.
"Indiana is a very balanced team just like us,' Michigan
coach Mark Rosen said. "They don't have a single player
who will kill you, but they fly around and pick you apart
from all over."
The Nittany Lions have taken 24 straight games from the
Wolverines in eight matches dating back to 1995, but this
season provides Michigan's best chance to end that streak.
After winning II consecutive matches, No. 12 Penn Stat*
has dropped three out of its last four, plummeting to join the
rest of the pack and reflecting that in the Big Ten, "anybody
can be beaten and anybody can beat you," Rosen said.
"Everyone has their weaknesses and everyone has their
strengths, and while Penn State was untouchable last year,
nobody is anymore," Rosen said.
This weekend's matches hold amplified significance in
both the conference and the national picture because even
one victory can vault Michigan back into the rankings.

Today, the Michigan women's cross country
team is looking to shed its unlucky 13 for a
number much more to its liking.
The Wolverines will take on, among others,
Stanford - the No. I ranked team in their divi-
sion. Michigan is ranked No. 13.
The Wolverines will try to lipe up to the
challenge this weekend by competing against
the Cardinal and the other teams at the Notre
Dame Invitational.
This should be a better run for the
Wolverines, since during previous meets this

season they've had to run 6 kilometers instead
of the 5K that they will run at Notre Dame.
The run will be held at Burke Memorial Golf
Course in South Bend.
Other teams running include North Carolina
State, Arizona, Duke, Ball State and host Notre
Dame.
Last weekend the Wolverines got the wcek
off, but so far this season they have been on a
winning streak, with team titles in the past
three meets.
At the William and Mary Invitational two
weeks ago, the Wolverines brought home their
third team title of the season. Katie Clifford-
Jazwinski placed runner-up at that meet.

Minnesota charges
ex-players with cheating
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Seventeen
former men's basketball players must
respond to allegations they cheated
while at Minnesota or risk losing class
credits or even their degrees.
"Very soon, the letters will be going
out to the students," university provost
Bob Bruininks said yesterday. "We hope
to move forward on this very quickly"
The charges are in a report from a
blue-ribbon committee of professors
who spent eight months investigating
allegations of cheating in the men's bas-
ketball program.
Professor emeritus Warren lbel, who
chaired the six-member comnmittee,
wrote that the investigation 'has been
"difficult and disheartening for all
involved:'
"It has been, in some ways, a lone
procedure," he said and added, "The
committee's work is done'
Each of the former basketball players
faces one to six charges of misconduct.
Those players are no longer on campus.
One retired professor was also implicated.
Federal law prevents the university
from releasing the names of those
charged. The report does not provide
details of how the alleged cheating hap-
pened. w
