9A - The Michigan Daily - Thursday, October 5, 2000 4G IND Kid A; Radiohead; Capitol By Luke Smith Dzifly Arts -rnter Kid A, Radiohead's brave fourth album, hit U.S. stores Tuesday. It car- ries an ocean of ambient sounds and cryptic keyboard loops, many of which are spread wide by Thom Yorke's crooning vocals. After the commercial and critical success of 1997's OK Coinputer (1.2 million in U.S. sales), the band returns post-millennium with an entirely different sound. Kid A for- *kes the guitar driven riffs that pro- pelled their previous releases, replac- ing them with drum loops, keyboard samples and computer programs. The album opens with sampling of aYorke vocal snippet laid gently across pulsing keyboards and ambient drum loops in "Everything in its right place," an immediate indulgence into the musical genius that reverberates rou hout the record. Musical con- exity may not have been the aim of this expansive track, but the triple tracked alternating vocals and muf- fled keyboards slanted against grainy computer electronica gives the open- ing track a feel all its own. The vocals are masked under effects with muffled wording and pulse almost in tune with the tribal looping, intertwined with the tapping of drumsticks. Organ chords crescen- do mid way thru the song and as faint- ly as they entered, they give way to a teetering arrangement of computer flashes and the mystical vocals. "National Anthem" was originally intended to be a B-side for OK Compiter but the band liked it too much and added it to Kid A. Beginning with a bass line that is reminiscent of older Radiohead, the song decomposes into an orchestral explosion of Yorke's voice, a driving bass beat and a slew of horns, all end- ing in a heartbeat. "How to disappear completely" is a song for the Radiohead purist, some- one not quite ready for the band's abrupt change of direction. It sounds as though it could have easily fit into place on OK Computer "Treefingers" is completely instru- mental, zooming in and out with shimmering keyboards that never seem to snap quite into place. The blurring of instruments that make up the song is almost impossible to fol- low. Radiohead's complete departure from liquefied rock is a clear attempt to reinvent themselves and the genre that they stand alone within. The pro- -ression of the band has been any- thing but stunted and to call Kid A a musical coming of age would be nothing short of complete under- statement. Kid A finds itself so far from pop music that to call it an album is unfit- ting, this is a symphony with ten movements. Thom Yorke's inventive creativity forces pop music to take a hard look at the hook, the chorus and the verse to see if they are all neces- sary. Kid A is an orchestral arrange- ment of svnth and song, laced-with bulging bass beats, deep drum thumps, all covered by the croon of Thom Yorke.
