By Jee Chang For the Daily Students see them around cleaning up after football Saturdays, painting over graffiti on the walls and making sure the campus buildings that hundreds of peo- ple travel through each day are main- tained. Considering the mess college students can produce, it's fair to say the University janitors have a great deal of patience and demonstrate a strong work ethic. Howard Pease, a janitor of 33 years in West Quad, described the hidden aspects of his job in an interview. The Michigan Daily: What is the hardest thing about your job? Howard Pease: The messes. I've encountered almost anything you could imagine. Puke. pee in the trash cans. You never know what to expect. As long as we have the right supplies, it's not too bad. But it takes you about a month to get use to it. TMD: What is the best thing about work? HP: When there's no extra work to do. And when parents come in and compli- ment us on how great the building looks. TMD: Tell me about the worst thing you've encountered. HP: Bulimic girls in the bathrooms. We have to sit down and talk to them and tell them that they are hurting them- selves. I don't understand what they are trying to do. Parents, they ... uh. they want cverv- thing right away ... we try to do as much as we can in eight hours e cry day, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. We do o\ertime. we do everything. TMD: What's the hardest thine to deal with' HP: Move-in and move-out. TMD: What do you think about the eraffiti on the walls ? HP: I can tell you there are a lot of four-letter words. TMD: Which is better to clean: Girils or boys bathrooms"?. HP: Boys. Girls ... I don't know why. but they are the worst things to clean. TMD: What are some of the horrors you remember? HP: Homeless people breaking in., doing things they shouldn't be doing. Also, kids have a tendency - I don't think deliberately - to like to set things on fire. TMD: What's the funniest thinge you've seen? HP: Watching someone run through the hallways nude. Larry Nozero Quartet See Friday. 9 p.m. The Firefly Club, 207 S. Ashley. $8. 913-9900. Each ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees, 464 gallons of oil, 42 gallons. of gaso- line, 7,000 gallons of water and 3.5 cubic y s l d pa yards of landfill space. The average American annually throws away 160 million tons of garbage. Recycling one tin can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours.
