SportsWednesoay - September 6, 2000 - The Michigan Daily --- 13B Paterno's worries grow after 0-2 Kevin O'Neill, one of the most outspoken of Big Ten coaches, is off to the New York Knicks for an assistant coaching position. Sourcestern llues new coach STATE COLLEGE (AP) - It's. been 10 years since Joe Paterno has dealt with an 0-2 start, so he's strug- gling to find answers. "I've got to be careful whether the other guys are that good, or are we that bad'?" said the Penn State coach. "I'm not sure." Penn State's 24-6 loss to Toledo on Saturday stunned the players and even led to some finger pointing. Tailback Larry Johnson, who scored the team's only touchdown of the season, questioned the play selec- tion, and called the offense "too pre- dictable." Paterno wouldn't comment on Johnson's remarks, but said there's enough blame to spread around. "I would hope we keep our dirty laundry to ourselves," he said. "We're all frustrated. That's why I kept my mouth shut so I didn't say anything I'd be sorry about." The Nittany Lions have gained just 308 total yards -- 36 rushing -- and scored I 1 points in two games. The offensive line isn't opening holes, the running backs aren't creating plays, the receivers are dropping passes and the quar- terbacks are missing throws. "That's the worst thing you can do," Paterno said about changing the offensive system. "When you get licked, it's easy to try to find a cure- all. There aren't any. Whether they saw the same plays we ran five years ago on tapes doesn't make a difference. We had opportunities. We just didn't exe- cute." Paterno said he will make changes, particularly on the offensive line. Jor- dan Caruso returns at guard after missing the first two games, but Joe lorio remains side- lined with mononucleosis. Rashard Casey's job as the starting quarterback isn't in jeopardy even though the senior has been replaced by Matt Senneca in both games. "Rashard has been pretty good if they catch the football," Paterno said. "He's overshot some people, but nobody is 100 percent. A couple of those passes would've kept the drives going. You have to be careful how critical you are of Rashard. He's doing the best he can. He's not getting much help." Casey is 12-of-37 for 204 yards, with one touchdown and one inter- ception. Fans at Beaver Stadium booed him throughout the game Saturday, and cheered when Senneca entered. "A lot of the things that happened weren't Rashard's fault," Senneca said. While many players displayed their frustration after Saturday's loss, the team appears focused on its next opponent, Louisiana Tech. "There was a sense of frustration, but over the last 48 hours, it's changed its tone," said defensive end Justin Kurpeikis. "We've still got 10 games left. No one on this team is a quitter." Tyler Lenda, a converted guard, draws inspiration from knowing his EVANSTON (AP)- Bill Carmody, who posted a 92-25 record in his four years as head coach at Princeton, will be introduced Wednesday.as Northwest- ern's new basketball coach, The Associ- ated Press has learned. He will replace Kevin O'Neill, who resigned five days ago to take ajob as an #sistant with the New York Knicks, according to a source close to Carmody, who spoke on the condition he not be identified. Carmody was not available for com- ment yesterday. Northwestern athletic director Rick Taylor was out of his office, and a school spokesman would only say that a news conference has been scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday. "Our new men's basketball coach will there" spokesman Kyle Coughlin said. Carmody inherits a Northwestern pro- gram that has had just one winning sea- son in the last six years. The Wildcats were 5-25 last season and didn't win a single Big Ten game. Four players left the program. But Carmody might be uniquely quali- fled for Northwestern's rebuilding effort. He spent the past 18 years as either the head coach or an assistant at Prince- $n, a school that doesn't givs athletic scholarships and has academic standards as tough as Northwestern's. In spite of that, Carmody took the Tigers to the postseason each year. Princeton made lie NCAA tournament afier going undefeated in Isvy League play his first two seasons, and advanced to the second round in 1998. The Tigers went to the NIT the past two years. Carmody's best season was 1997-98, when the Tigers went 27-2 and were ranked as high as No. 8 during the regu- lar season. It was the highest ranking for an Ivy League team in nearly 30 years, and the 27 victories set a school record. Before becoming head coach, Car- mody spent 14 years as an assistant to Hall of Fame coach Pete Carril. The Tigers were 251-125 (.668) during that time, winning four straight Ivy League titles (1989-92) and seven overall. They also lost four first-round NCAA tourna- ment games by a total of just 15 points using their patient passing game that often led to backdoor layups. The high point of his tenure as an assistant came at the 1996 NCAA tour- nament. Carril had already announced he would retire after the tournament and Carmody had been named his successor. Facing defending national champion UCLA in the first round, the Tigers upset the Bruins 43-41. It was during his tenure as an assistant that Carmody got to know Henry Bienen, now the president of Northwest- ern. When Bienen was a dean at Prince- ton, lie and Carmody used to play in lunchtime pickup games. Carmody played at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., graduating in 1975. He coached at Fulton-Montgomery Community College for a year before returning to ion as an assistant coach and junior Varsity head coach until 1981). After spending a year as an assistant coach at Providence College, Carmody joined Carril's staff APPHOTO Joe Paterno struggles with latest drawback in Penn State football.
