Blue takes two i*n Hoosier state 1rom staff and wire reports After opening the season with three overwhelming losses and one mercur- ial win over Missouri, the Michigan women's soccer team (2-0 Big Te n, 3-3 overall) kicked off the Big TFen season with two more wins over Purdue and Indiana. Friday, freshman Stephanie Chavez stung Purdue (1-1, 8-2) with an over- time goal, assisted by Abby Crumpton, to beat the Boilermakers 2-1 in double overtime. Senior Carissa Stewart, pia- tooning with freshman Suzie Grech this season, stopped eight shots, help- ing to preserve Michigan's chances heading into the second overtime. Stewai-t's goalkeeping won her the sta- tus of being first place on the Michigan career saves list with 229 saves. Michigan's foray into West Lafayette was a tight battle throughout. The WVolverines took the 1-0 lead on Vicky Whitley's goal going into halftime. They outshot the Boilermakers 8-5 in the process. After Purdue freshman Annette Kent netted the equalizer in the 62nd minute, the two teams wres- tled without scoring for another 55 minutes. The lack of scoring was not caused by a lack of offense. In the first over- time, the Boilermakers heavily pres- sured Michigan, outshooting them 6-3, but Stewart manag.ed to hold the fort until her teammates could swing the momentum. Finally, Michigan point-leader Abby Crumpton fed Chavez in front of the goal in the 117th minute. The game- winning goal was Chavez's second of the year. At the game's end, Purdue goalkeeper Elizabeth Boldt had 13 saves, but she could not keep the versa- tile Michigan offense out of the net in overtime. After winning the hard-fought game against Purdue, Michigan traveled to Bloomington to face No. 22 Indiana yestecrd ay. The Wolverines assaulted Indiana early, rifling~ seven shots n goal and six corner kicks in the first half. Freshman Amber Wilson scored her third goal of the season 19 minutes into the game. (Grech took early advan- tage of her turn in the goalie rotation. turning away three of Indiana's eight shots in the first half. Michigan held onto a 1-0 lead until Michigan's other leading scorer, Abby Crumpton, finished off the Hoosiers with an insurance goal at the 79 minute mark. After being outscored 10-1 in their first three games, Michigan has outscored their opposition I1I-I in their last three victories. The reversal of for- tunes has not been to a lack of quality competition. Their victims, Missouri, Purdue and Indiana, are a combined 18-6 on the season.
