14A -- The Michigan Daily - Thursday, September 14, 2000 Golfers looking good as Little Rock looms By Ryan C. Moloney Daily Sports Writer In the golf-crazed state of Michigan, chafiging leaf colors and dropping tem- peratures signal the end of a summer- longlove affair. Within a couple of months, the carth-shattering "ping" of a driver teeting Titleist will be replaced by the diluted, deceiving "scrape" of driver meeting carpet, then Titleist, in random golf domes. But for the Michigan women's golf team, fall means competition. A young and inexperienced team last year, the Wolverines return an intact nucleus with the intention of challenging for the title at the Big Ten championships. The Wolverines take their first step towards that goal at the Wolverine Invitational this weekend at the University Golf Course. "We haven't played this well at this UofM Tennis Club Tournament 9/16-9/17 @ Palmer Field Courts $7/sirigles; $10 doubles team Sign up at mass meeting 9/13 or 9/14 @ CCRB from 7-8 p.m. Bring $$$ to meeting! point in ten years," coach Kathy Teichert said. "We're expecting to do well" As is the case with their golf course training partners - the Michigan cross country teams - the success of the season hinges on the depth factor. "A couple of freshman have come into the fold and could challenge for spots," Teichert said. "If everyone stays on top of their game we could go nine or ten deep. "We can only take five or six come travel time." Among the returnees, junior Bess Bowers has staked an early claim to the first spot on the team. Sophomore Kim Benedict and junior Cortney Reno have also looked good in the early going. Teichert also mentioned the improved play of sophomore Sarah Rector, calling her "a big surprise." "She's added length and maturity," Teichert said, "she's more confident than last year." When asked about the change in preparation at this point in the season as opposed to past seasons, Teichert cited the team's collective maturation as well as a talk she had with the team at the end of the winter semester. "I told them that they needed to con- tinue to be competitive," Teichert said. "I thought our team chemistry was great but the expectations are rising. "When you get older you need to step it up a notch and we've got lots of leadership - they play with confi- dence. Michigan's main competition at the invitational are Arkansas-Little Rock. The Trojans are perennial powers in the Sun Belt conference and return three All-Sun Belt golfers, led by Patricia Mejia. The senior holds a career-low 72 to her credit. Senior Tamy Saran also sports a career-low 72 as well as a stroke aver- age in the high 70s. Junior Laurie Vescovo also could be a factor. "It's very early, but it's a good oppor- tunity for the teams to se where they are in terms of their lineups," Teichert said.
