Fostering a
com eback
When DeShaun Foster came to UCLA, both he and the program were on
top of the game. Now they need each other to regain national prominence.

Robert Thomas will tell you the UCLA campus is
second to none.
"The beach. Bel-Air. Beverly Hills," says Thomas,
"You meet movie stars - there are so many things to
do."
The Bruins' linebacker can list a thousand ways to
spend your spare time in Westwood Village. But his
roommate, tailback DeShaun Foster, just likes to chill.
"Bruin Walk," Foster says. "It's shady over there. You
can just chill -just sit there and eat or whatever."
At the end of last season, Foster had plenty of time to
sit in the shade - and think.

When he had arrived at UCLA two years
earlier, life was great. Bruin Walk - the
heart of central campus - was
buzzing with talk of gridiron hero-
ism, and Foster was riding an out-
standing high school career onto a
preseason top 10 team.
"He had great speed," recalls
UCLA coach Bob Toledo. And Foster's
amazing numbers did the talking: 3,398 rushing yards
and 54 rushing touchdowns, a California state record by
10. He averaged over 10 yards each time he touched the
ball.
