14 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 12, 2000 Goalies splitting time for field hockey By Benjamin Singer Daily Sports Writer The graduation of goaltender Kati Oakes has left Michigan's field hockey net wide open. With Oakes forgoing her final year of cli- gibility, Michigan coach Marcia Pankratz has decided that for now, two heads are bet- ter than one. Junior Maureen Tasch and freshman Molly Maloney have been alternating starts for the first six games. "Mo started the season, then Molly played the next game, then they've just been rotat- ing starts," Pankratz said. "It's already pre- determined and it's a team unified effort back there" Maloney is 3-0 and Tasch is 2-1 with her one loss coming against No. 3 North Carolina. "It was our strongest opponent, and the played well," Pankratz said. In her two years of backing up Oakes, Tasch had a goals against average of 0.68 in eight games with a 2-0 record. Maloney is a two-time All-State First-Team goalie from Lake Forest High School in Illinois. She was in the net for 20 shutouts and a microscopic 0.047 goals against average last year. "They're both really good goalkeepers." Pankratz said. "They're splitting time because they both can contribute to the team" Maloney's appreciation for her starts show that she does not take her playing time for granted., "I'm pleased as a freshman to get any time that I can," Maloney said. "I'm glad to be sharing time with Mo. I think she's a great goalie and I love working with her on a daily basis" Although the time in the net has been evenly split so far, there is a chance that later on in the year one goalie will emerge as the lone successor to Oakes. "This is our tactic so far and we'll just have to see how the rest of the season pans out, Pankratz said. "It's impossible really to say." With a tough conference schedule, the Wolverines may need a familiar formula day in and day out. "I think once the Big Ten season starts we'll look for a little more consistency back there," Tasch said. "I think somebody is going to step up and take it." However, Pankratz does not appear to have any sense of urgency in finding just one goaltender. "They both have their strengths," Pankratz said. "There's really no controver- sy" Pankratz has been taking advantage of these early games by trying to see what forumla works best in net for her team whether it be choosing one goalie or letting the two alternate for the rest of the year. Even after six games, she still does not seem to favor one over the other. "If someone eels hurt. that will change the decision a lot," Pankratz said. Pacers interested in hiring coach Knight Indiana Pacers basketball coach Isiah Thotsas has reportedly stated that he would like former Indiana bas- ketball coach Bob Knight to join him on the Pacers' bench. Thomas told WDFN Radio yes- day that he would like to hire Knight, who was fired by Indiana on Sunday after 29 years at the school that saw him win three NCAA championships - one of which with Thomas as a sophomore in 1981. Thomas told reporters at his charity golf tournament that Knight was wel- come on his bench anytime and hoped that he could serve the same type of mentor/apprentice role that Tex Wi@ did with Phil Jackson in Chicago. -- From staffutd wire reports DAILY SCOREBOARD Updated at 11 p.m. Home tears in CAPS 'M' SCHEDULE Thursday: Men's soccer vs. Illinois-Chicago. 7:30 pm ar Elibel tiel iFday: idhockey vs. Ball State. 4:30 pm at 00 Field Women's soccer at Purdue. 5:00 pm Volleyball vs. Houston at Arkansas Invitational5 :30 pm MLB STANDINGS AMERICAN LEAGUE Central W L Pct GB Chicago Sox 85 57 .599 - Cleveland 76 63 .547 7.5 Detroit 70 72 .493 15 Kansas City 67 76 .469 18.5 Minnesota 62 81 .434 23,5 Las W L Pct GB NY Yankees 82 59 .582 - Boston 74 e7 .525 8 Toronto 75 00 .5a4 0 Baltimore 64 78 .451 18.5 Tampa Bay 6182.42722 Pees0 BRAD QUINN/Da The Michigan field hockey team has outshot its opponents 48-12 with two new goalies in net.
