Bntney and

show atVideo

! The MTV Video Music Awards entered the new mil-
lennium with the worst hosts of the century.
Shawn and Marlon Wayans set a new standard for
emcee futility at last night's awards ceremony. Despite a
night of above-average live performances and some clas-
sic out-of-left-field moments, the VMA's were unfortu-
nately marred by the god-awful youngsters of the
Wayans clan.
Their horrible opening monologue may well have
been one of the most awkward moments in the VMA's 15
year history. From dull jokes about the brawl-shortened
Source Awards show to an almost Leno-esque bit about
"faulty Firestone tires, the Wayans boys were unbeliev-
ably bad. There would have been dead silence following
their introduction if not for some fairly loud boos.
And the duo only got worse. Any momentum the show
got from its celebrity presenters was killed whenever the
camera switched to the Wayans family's answer to Tito
and Jermaine. They brought more abrupt halts to the
show than the many, many commercial breaks. At one
point, while Marion stalled on one his lines of canned
dialogue, an agitated Shawn elbowed his brother in the
ribs -- all while on camera.
Thankfully, the live performances - including hot
sets by Britney Spears and Eminem that will surely be
watercooler talk today -- helped save a sinking ship.
Early on, Rage Against the Machine displayed its riot-
inducing stage energy, while Sisqo did the old start-
with-a-new-ballad-and-segue-into-the-hit strategy, dust-
ing off the spring break booty anthem, "Thong Song."
Marshall Mathers, aka Slim Shady, aka Eminem, had
one of the more memorable performances in recent
VMVA history, starting "The Real Slim Shady" outside of
Radio City Music Hall and then making his way -
along with more than a hundred Em doppelgangers -
into the venue, down the main aisle and onto the stage.
He then finished up his slot with the mad rant, " 1 Am."
(Not a bad showing from Detroit's favorite white boy.)
The Red Hot Chili Peppers were honored with the
Video Vanguard Award for their career in music videos,
and responded with a cool, collected version of
"Cali fornication." 'N Sync pulled out a cheesy, video-

The second Marvel vs. Capcom game would be virtu-
ally perfect if it didn't have horrible music. Dreamtcast
games can have more than one constantly looping b~it of
music with an inane singer crooning "take you for a
ride" between matches. '
That being said, the game is stunning in every other
respect. Capcom's famouis' 2D

The backgrounds are similarly
lush and have interesting animation. Oh, and there's
reportedly around 50 characters that can be played ini the
game, and you only start with about half of them.
Unlocking the entire roster (as well as bonus colors~ for
them) gives the game a goal orientation most fighters
lack.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 brings together the fighterspeo-
pie have been demanding; Jill Valentine from Resient
Evil, Tron Bonne from the Megaman series, and. an
overall load of huge Marvel characters that yob:. can
pummel using the little girls from the Capcom'side.
There's nothing quite so strange as pummeling the')man
mountain which is Dr. Doom using some cute :ittle
Capcom character.
The special moves of the characters display some of
the greatness of the game. Jill, for instance, appears to
have gained control over her old zombie adversaries,
since she can command various legions of the undead to
swoop, swipe or crash burning into her opponents.-She
can also command the huge Tyrant to appear and cuse
some damage. Hey, a poor little cop needs something to
defeat the heavy hitters that could wipe out a good por-
tion of the X-Men bench.
One aspect of the game is that it is entirely aiteam
event. You can't play with or against less than three
characters (at least without a Game Shark). This makes
team combos an especially important part of the gme.
Once a power bar has charges far enough, it takes,:-nly
a simple pressing of the controller shoulder buttons to
perform a massive attack on your opponents. This acces-
sibility makes the game's fun side available to th6'.er-
son who doesn't have the thumb calluses to enter= the
horribly complicated commands for spectacula ives
(even though those do still exist for those who demand
them).
If you like fighters at all, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 'will
you give you plenty of excitement. If you hate fighters,
you just might change your mind after this disc spins in
your Dreamcast.

aided run-through of "It's Gonna Be :Me," but their huge
stage production was left in the dust by the five-guys-
with-mics formula of Nelly's "Country Grammar."
OhL, and then there was B~ritney. Oh my God. In a
quick tear of some clothing, Miss Spears went from
sweet teen queen to unquestioned sex goddess of our
generation. Jaws dropped as she gyrated around the
stage, hair extensions flowing and cleavage heaving. I

But maybe the best onstage performance w~as put in by
Rage bassist Tim Bob, who, while Limp Bizkit was
accepting the Best Rock Video award, appeared 20 feet
above the ground, crouchingi in a tree-like stage prop.
Security guards and stagehands tried to get him down,
Fred Durst urged him to jump and both the Wayans
brothers freaked out. After three hours of teleprompter
tripe, oddly-matched presenters and even a "surprise"
appearance by Whitney Houston, there was finally a
spontaneous moment.

'Jaws' sinks its teeth into DVD

By Chris Cousino
Daily Arts Writer
In ceclebration of its 25th anniversary
of terrorizing beach-goer's everywhere,
the Great White enters the waters of the
DVD market with Universal's summer
release "Jaws: 25th Anniversary Special
*dition." And for you shark hunters out
there, .this DVD has some meat to it,
including a beautiful transfer and a num-
ber of extra goodies, most notably a 70
minute documentary on the making of
the film.
But hang on to your foul weather gear,
mraty. For those of you who don't know
this chum tale, "Jaws" is a whopper of an
adventure horror film, chock with blood
and feat, family and surly sea captains.
uased on a novel by Peter Benchley and
directed by then newcomer Steven
Spielberg, "Jaws" is the story of the

small beach front community Amity
Island that becomes stricken by the
plague of a lone fin on the horizon, that
of a man-eating 20 foot Great White
shark.
Roy Schieder plays the warm and
somewhat timid -chief Martin Brody
who tries to protect both his family and
the town from the monster of the deep,
while pressures mount from the mayor
to not close the beaches since it's prime
tourist season. Oceanographer Matt
Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) is called in
to lend advice as the body count contin-
ues to rise. And we haven't even seen
the shark yet.
The one person on the island that
may be able to stop the shark is the griz-
zled shark hunter Quint (masterly
played by Robert Shaw), who, along
with Brody and 1-ooper, sets out to kill
the beast. And the rest is both

horror/adventure genre and box office
movie history.
The "Making of..." documentary
included on the disc is very interesting
as it contains interviews with the princi-
ple cast (except the deceased Shaw), the
producers, screenwriters and Spiel berg
himself. Tales of production woes, sink-
ing sharks and last minute shoots in edi-
tor Verna Field's home swimming pool
make the documentary a must-see for
the "Jaws" fans, as well as any movie
buff.
A few extra scenes and outtakes not
part of the documentary are fun to watch
but arec unmemorable. Don't spend your
time with the silly Shark World facts
(watch Discovery or National
(Geographic instead), but a Jaws fan
might enjoy playing the trivia quiz once
or twice. The inclusion of several trailers
(including the re-release and another
