Gosh knows the Badgers did months ago. Whether or not most people in Ann Arbor realize it. there is a collective hatred of Michigan in Madison - a town credited for coining such phrases as "Ann Arbor's a whore," et al. That hatred has been fanned the last two seasons by a harsh reality - Michigan was the only team to beat the Badgers in back-to-back efforts. Don't necessarily believe the hype about Wisconsin. First off, Barry Alvarez's boys landed in the Rose Bowl the last two years without hurdling traditional Big Ten obstacles. In 1998, they avoided BCS-bound Ohio State. And last season's schedule spared the Badgers Penn State, a top-five contender until late in the season. Secondly, suspension- fest may vet catch up with this year's squad. Twenty- six players are in the NCAA doghouse for accepting cheap sneakers. and the weakened Badgers barely beat Western Michigan in their season debut. Among those suspended in that game was junior cor- ner Jamar Fletcher - the Big Ten's reigning intercep- tion king two years run- ning, and probably the Big Ten's most talented player this season. But even the naughty Badgers have circled Sept. 30. Although Wisconsin has four games in which to serve the suspensions, it has chosen to oblige all of them in three. Why? Michigan. Alvarez is out for blood in his fourth game of the vear. And that, at the very least, should provide for an entertaining matchup. Fletcher has the ability to take away an entire half of the field - -but up against Derrell he'll be put to the test. Keep in mind that the two teams did not play during their first two years, and last season, Purdue handed itself the loss, dropping 13 passes in the 38-12 defeat. But this year Purdue will be loaded once again on offense and will have to stand strong against some of the highest expectations the program has ever seen. Last season. Brees finished fourth in the balloting and the city of West Lafayette may be already planning this season's victory parade. "We're seniors, it's our last go-around. and we know this offense, as good as we're ever going to know it," Brees told the Lafayette Journal and Courier. Last year's leading receivers Chris Daniels and Randall Lane will be missed, but Brees won't be left without support. Tight end Tim Stratton finished last sea- son with 49 receptions and returns for his junior year.
