We'll never know, because the Sparties have been that way for years. But it is safe to say there will be a shortage of good D' in East Lansing this fall. "No question we lost a lot of players from last season," said Michigan State coach Bobby Williams. "A lot of defensive play- ers - but I think we have a good nucleus of players coming back." Williams didnt mention that they also lost a head coach when his for- mer boss Nick Saban took the money and ran to the Bayou right beforeNIichigan State's Citrus Bowl muatchup with Florida. At first, it appeared Williams' appointment could be the best thing to happen to the Spartans since pas- teurized milk. They emerged "icto- riouS lrom the Citrus and changed the mind of hot-shot recruit Charles Rogers, persuading him to don the green and white. But thrown into the fire or not, "It's the nature of the business that we're all expected to win," Williams sai . That's a little trickier without the likes of Julian Peterson (led the Spartans in sacks) and Aric Morris (second in interception yards), who have moved on to greener pastures. Even more of a dilemma: To whom does quarterback Ryan Van Dyke throw the ball? Last October in Spartan Stadium,. Plaxico Burress and Gairi Scott helped burn the Wolverines for 490 total yards. This year, both receivers are gone, and sweet-stuff Rogers (who turned down Michigan) is benched for aca- demic incligibility. "No question - the receivers." Williams said. "They're all young without much playing experieice." This will test the mettle of sopho- more running back T.J. Duckett. Can the 252-pounder break as many open when nobody has to worry about the deep threat? He might have more luck trying to bust through from the other side - Duckett had seven unassisted tack- les while at linebacker in 1999. "Certainly I hope he has a tremen- (ous season. He is still growing into his position," Williams said. While Duckett gets the hype, keep an eye out for another T.J. when the Spartans come to Ann Arbor O'et. 7.' T.. Turner has a knack for pick- ing off the pigskin and scooping up fumbles. He had more than 150 yards in turnover returns last season, and rivalry games tend to hinge on the unexpected. That said, don't expect anything too spectacular from Michigan State this vear in the Big House. -- David Der Herer C a ll 800 2 R EVIEW to enroll now! If he didn't, the Wolverines might not have John Navarre to fill in for Drew Henson at quarterback. Well into his senior year of high school, Navarre was all set to spend his four years at Northwestern. Evervthingu wvas falling into place. "You have 'our- scholarship, if you want to take it." Carr said, short and blunt, as is his custom. Navarre took it. Now almost two years later, it was Navarre. a redshirt freshman, who kicked off Michigan's 121st season of football as the starting quarterback. "Anybody who knows him knows he's got a great level of maturity. He's quiet, he's never hotdogged. he just went about his business" said Carey Venne. Navarre's coach at Cudahv High School. "He's got that Iceman trait." Evervone associated with Navarre has confidence in him a positive for the Wolverines, who are unsure exactly when Henson will play again. Depending on the report, Henson could return for UCLA next week or as late as Wisconsin on Sept. 30. Michigan announced on Aug. 24 that Henson had suffered a break in his right (plant) foot and would miss at least the opener. At least Navarre won't inherit an oflense in trouble. After averaging over 30 points per game last season, the Wolverines return a front four that might be the best in college football. David Tei'rell is a Heisman candidate and a proven big-game player. Anthony Thomas has 605 career carries under his belt. Each of these weapons reinforce Carr's major lesson for Navarre as he leads Michigan through the early part of the season: Stav within the offense and don't overextend yourself. "We're going to have the game plan we would've had if Henson were play- ing," Carr said. "I've tried to stress to .John (Navarre), 'Go in, play within vour ability. You're surrounded by good peo- ple. Have confidence in yourself:'. Most of Michigan's questions sur- round the defense, even after Henson's injury was announced. The secondary had a rough time for much of last year, although most of the key role-players return. Safety Cato June will miss the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. And the defensive line consists more youthful hope than proof at this stage. "There's always the unexpected, in terms of how voung guvs are going to play," Carr said. 2000 GOAL: Date Sept. 4 Sept. 1 Sept. 1£ Sept. 2 Oct. 2 Oct. 9 Oct. 23 Oct. 30 Nov. 6 Nov. 13 Nov. 20 Jan. 1 Navarre charged with task of leading loaded offense a 7 C C C (Oag.ow) (T THE COACH LAST SEASON Opponent Result 1 NOTRE DAME W, 26-22 .1 RICE W, 37-3 8 at Syracuse W. 18-13 5 at Wisconsin W, 21-16 PURDUE W. 38-12 at Michigan State L. 34-31 ILLINOIS L. 35-29 at Indiana W. 34-31 NORTHWE[STERN W. 37-3 at Penn State W. 34-31 OiIO STATE W. 24-17 Alabama W.35-34 PROFILE: S S S 0 0l 0l N N N aT r t - I SUNDAY SPECIAL Wolverines Score- You Save! 5% off for every touchdown pto25% off on all U of M gifts and clothing a All-state quarterback in high school n Quarterbacked Northern Michigan to an undefeated season in 1969 .
