LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily -- Wednesday, December 13, 2000 - 7 Abraham prepares to leave Senate f By Louie Meizlish Daily StafrReporter After serving in the U.S. Senate for the past six years, Republican Spencer Abraham is preparing to leave Capitol Hill, following his loss to Democratic Rep. Debbie Stabenow of Lansing. Stabenow will be sworn in, along with the other newly-elected senators, when the 107th Congress opens its session early next month. Not surprisingly, his staff members expressed disap- pointment. "The first couple of days were pretty hard back here. Some of our staff took vacations,' said Mar- garet Murphy, Abraham's press secretary. "It's a little unusual to go into a lame-duck session," she said. "But he will walk out with having passed 22 bills, which is more than any senator." Abraham has served on the Senate Budget, Judicia- ry, Small Business and Commerce committees. As to whether the senator would accept a nomina- tion by Texas Gov. George W Bush to serve as Secre- tary of Transportation, as some have speculated, Abraham's office would not comment. "We haven't heard anything," Murphy said. Bill Ballenger, editor of Inside Michigan Politics, said serving in the Senate during this lame-duck ses- sion cannot be easy on Abraham. "I imagine you feel disengaged and distracted," he said. Ballenger added that Abraham, 48, has reasons to be optimistic. "In his case, he's a comparatively young man and has to be thinking about whether George W. Bush will be elected and whether he could become part of that administration," Ballenger said. "I imagine he would be moving heaven and earth to get his bills passed because if he doesn't get them passed now, he'll never get them passed." Last week, Abraham made a goodbye speech on the Senate floor and arranged to have members of his staff sit on the floor -- an unusual privilege. In the speech, Abraham thanked former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole and Trent Lott (R-Miss.), the current majority leader, for "making me part of their circle of advisers, for their support on both leg- islative and political matters and, most importantly, for their friendship." Abraham also thanked various Democratic Senators such as Carl Levin of Michigan, Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts and Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut. Among the accomplishments that Abraham cited were a S500 per-child tax credit and making Congress "more accountable by requiring members to live by the same rules and regulations and mandates we impose on the rest of the country." Abraham said he was especially proud that, "I have never missed a single roll-call vote on the floor of the Senate. I have just cast, I think, my 2,002nd consecu- tive roll-call vote." Regents to consider more renovation work By Michael Grass Daily News EUitor At its meeting this month, the Univer- sity Board of Regents will consider an additional slate of renovation work on campus. The board will meet tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Fleming Administration Building. The regents are expected to approve an administrative reccomenda- tion to issue project bids and award a construction contract for the Phase l1 for renovations on the Dana Building, the home of the School of Natural Resources and Environment. State funding is covering 75 percent of Phase I's original S15 million pric- etag. But according to the meeting agenda, a revised project budget ups the cost of the project to about 517.7 mil- lion. The project is scheduled to get underway in May 2001 with a targeted completion date set for fall 2002. Another construction item on the agenda is a project that would expand the Perry Building, located on the cor- ner or Packard and Madison streets, for additional space for the Institute for Social Research. The 40,000 square-foot addition, tar- geted to begin in spring 2002 and be completed by the end of 2003, would eliminate 64 parking spaces on site and would cost 513.2 million from ISR funding. The project would house ISR's Inter-university Consortium for Political Research, currently located in rented space on Maynard Street, and the Sur- vey Methodologv Program. The Perry Building is already under renovation for ISR's Data Survey and Technology unit. That project, approved by the regents two years ago, is sched- uled to be complete by summer 2002. Other construction items include an upgrade to East Quad Residence Hall's fire safety and electrical sys- tems, and two medical center projects - an expansion to the University Hospitals' Birthing Center and the relocation of human resources offices to the North Campus Administrative Complex. The regents will also consider a rec- ommendation by University Chief Executive Officer Robert Kasdin to rtr nf ,I nl frt"C h n f ALEX WOLK/Qaily Clay Jenkinson, dressed as Thomas Jefferson, engages in a debate with Hal Bidlack, who appeared as Alexander Hamilton, at Clements Library.
