Orange crushed: Wolverines throttle Syracuse Turnovers, post play key 'M' in 82-65 defeat of Orangewomen By Benjamin Singer Daly Spolis \vier- Michigan wasn't wearing its home whites for a reason. "Yes, I am superstitious," Michigan coach Sue Guevara said. "We did lose in our white uniforms here at home. Therefore we wore the Maize today." If only Syracuse could have worn Maize, too. The Michigan women's basketball team (6-2) outplayed Syracuse (4-3) in nearly every aspect of the game to extend its winning K MvniuAN 82 streak to five. The STR-AC.sib l 65 82-65 score reflected the Wolverines' dominance last night at Crisler Arena. "Not one of our better ballgames, but then, I think Michigan had something to do with that," Svracuse coach Marianna Freeman said. "We just didn't play a very good basketball game." Michigan's free throw performance was one statistic that stood out --- the \Volverines hit 28-of-31 from the line. In the process, Michigan posted the ninth- highest single-game percentage (90.3 percent) in progriam history. In comparison, the Orangewomen only mustered 8 of 19 from the charity stripe. But, Michigan didn't always need to stand still to score - the Wolverines also racked up 30 points off Svracuse's 25 turnovers. "When you're playing a good team like Michigan, you can't beat your- selves," Freeman said. A common theme for Michigan of late has been waiting until the second half to pull away. Last night, it seemed that the Wolverines thought the second half came a little early. They put together an 8-0 run late in the first half to go up 32-23 before Syracuse started to keep pace, trailing 36-28 at the half. But, the Orangewomen couldn't stay with the Wolverines to start the second, as Michigan opened up with an 8-2 run. After 1uniorAlayne Ingram's 3-pointer to start the second half. Michigan led by double digits the rest of the way. "I felt like we had enough time to get back in it" Freeman said. "We have to learn to fight through tough moments." Guevara said she felt that her team did- n't control the tempo in the first half. But, at the midway mark in the second half with a double-digit lead, the Wolverines slowed Syracuse's offense. Michigan ran down the clock on both ends of the court to keep the Orangewomen at bay. The Wolverines' only challenge in the game was the battle for rebounds. With Syracuse averaging 49 rebounds per game coming in, Michigan knew that its height advantage wasn't going to auto- matically result in rebounds. Sure enough, it wasn't until the 14:22 mark in the first half before LeeAnn Bies crabbed Michigan's first rebound. "We came out a little lackadaisical, not SUNDAY MILWAUKEE Who: Michigan (6-2) vs. Marquette (3-4) When: 5 p.m. Sunday Latest: The Golden Eagles also beat Syracuse earlier this year, too, but in a much tighter game. Coach Sue Guevara on several occasions has referred to her inside players as the twin towers - with three, she could call them triplets. Freshman Jennifer Smith, sophomore LeeAnn Bies and junior Raina Goodlow were key in the paint for Michigan's blowout victory, espe- eially in the first half. Here's a look at the success that the Michigan's inside game had last night: hustling so much," Bies said. "They are an athletic team. They don't just stand and let the ball come to them" In the meantime, Syracuse's Leigh Aziz had already pulled down five boards, finishing the first half with eight. But, Aziz didn't get a single rebound in the second half, and at game's end, the Wolverines had been outrebounded just 39-36. Furthermore, Syracuse failed to take advantage of its I5 offensive rebounds, tallying just four second-chance points. "When they got an offensive rebound, we didn't just quit," Bies said. "You can't just hang your head after you made a mistake." Michigan also did its job offensively in the low post. A large chunk of the Wolverines' first half scoring output came from down low. 3ies, Jcnnifir Smith and Raina Goodlow shot 9 of 12 from the floor while the rest of the team hit just 3 of 18 in the first 20 minutes. "I felt it was our strength at the time," Bies said. "Our guards can make the shots and it's not a necessity that we carrv the team. At that time our inside game was really going for it."
